09:20 – update – The number of PGE customers now effected by this morning’s outage is about 24-hundred, and they are all on the Rio Del Mar side of Highway 1.
09:10 - Original story –
A power outage that began at 5 minutes to 9 this morning, and initially impacted more than 6,000 P.G. & E. Customers from the Day Valley Area of Aptos north, and from the Forest Of Nisene Marks State Park down to Rio Del Mar, is now effecting about 2400 customers in the Rio Del Mar area west of Highway 1. P.G. & E. Crews are working to determine the cause of the outage. The current estimated time of restoral is 1:15 this afternoon.
Another 108 P.G. & E customers in the Corralitos area lost their power at 4 minutes to 9, and a P.G. & E. crew is working to restore power there. The estimated time of restoral there is 2 o’clock this afternoon.

An annual fundraising campaign raised more money this time than last time. Even though there were concerns that there would be less donations due to the pandemic, there were, in fact, more....with 707 thousand dollars raised this time, in comparison to last time’s 413 thousand dollars. The Santa Cruz Gives campaign raises money for local non-profits, and this year the one donated to the most was the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter, which brought in $105,000. The next highest (with $60,000) went to the Coastal Watershed Council.

The in-ground burial of veterans and their spouses is coming soon to the California Central Coast Cemetery on the Former Fort Ord. That’s because the 2nd Phase of the cemetery in Seaside is nearly complete. There will be space there for more than 1,000 in-ground cremains, and more than 1900 in-ground crypts. The 84.4 acre veterans cemetery, which first opened in 2016, was broken up into 11 phases, so that it could be funded and built-out over time. The 26-acre 1st phase included the administrative and maintenance buildings, as well as columbaria that can house 5,000 cremation urns and a committal shelter for ceremonies. Under a new health order signed earlier this week by Santa Cruz County Health Officer Dr Gail Newel, elective surgeries will be put on pause this evening at 5 PM.
The order was signed due to the overwhelming need to address the shortage of staff and facilities for patients infected by COVID-19.
