Marina K-9 wins 2nd place 03/19/12 8p.m. TDH

a marina police dog and his handler have won 2nd place at a statewide competition.   The 27th annual K-9 Competition was held in Visalia last Friday.  30 police dogs took part in the trials.   Marina police k-9 “Sammy” won 2nd place in the narcotics competition, for finding drugs hidden inside a building.  This was the first competition as a team for sammy and his handler, Detective Steven Russo.

Wanted man arrested 03/19/12 7:45p.m. TDH

A 50-year-old wanted felon was arrested on Sunday in salinas, after allegedly attempting to steal items from wal-mart.    Lewis taft was wanted on 5-felony warrants.  He was arrested after wal-mart security guards reported that taft was leaving the store with children’s clothing.   Taft was booked into monterey county jail on multiple charges.

 

Surfer died from Neck injuries 03/19/12 7p.m. TDH

the santa cruz county coroner has determined that a surfer who was found dead last week died from neck injuries.  on Monday (the 12th), 60-year-old ben lomond resident scott woodworth was found motionless in the water near shark’s cove by another surfer.  Woodworth was brought ashore, and declared dead at the scene.

Neglected horse euthanized 03/19/12 5p.m. TDH

A severely neglected horse was euthanized in Prunedale over the weekend, after it was abandoned off of elkhorn road.   Monterey county sheriff’s deputies,  a vet with the monterey county equine veterinary services, and officials with SPCA for monterey county responded to the property on campagna way.   The horse was suffering from a range of health issues, and the decision was made to euthanize the animal.  The SPCA for monterey county is offering a 1-thousand dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.  A witness reported seeing a pick-up truck with an older white 2-door trailer leave the area at 10 p.m. Saturday night.    The horse was described as brown, with a white star on the left of his face, and 1-white sock on his left hind leg.

No Spring Admissions: CSUMB 03/19/12 6:45p.m. TDH

California state university leaders have announced that most campuses around the state will not be admitting students next spring.   Admissions for Spring of 2013 have been suspended for all but 8 C-S-U campuses.   CSU-monterey bay is among the schools that will not be admitting students during the spring semester.  Students are still encouraged to apply or transfer for the fall semester.
