surveys taken during last week’s “registry week” event help officials determine how many chronically homeless people are in santa cruz. about 155 homeless people in santa cruz county are at a high risk of death.  the survey determined which of the 325 surveyed homeless people had “mortality risk identifiers”, such as aids, liver disease and other illnesses.


gilroy holiday inn 05/14/12 1000 e.a.


a hotel project near the gilroy premium outlets was unanimously approved by the city planning COMMISSION AT their meeting recently.  the project includes a 180 room holiday inn and a 150 room extended stay holiday inn on the corner of leavesly road and forest street. the approval comes with the condition that the developer further negotiates with the city before presenting the plan to the city council.  the proposal is set to be discussed by the city council at their meeting on may 21st.

a proposal for the city of pacific grove to share police services with the city of seaside is set to be discussed this wednesday.  the pacific grove city council is looking into asking seaside’s police chief to oversee operations at both city’s departments.  its estimated that if both cities share a police chief, each city would save 100-thousand dollars annually.  pacific grove’s current police chief, darius engles is set to retire in july.

more than 2-thousand people turned out this weekend to walk or run along west cliff drive to raise money for local non-profits.  the 32nd annual human race walkathon and fun run expects to raise 250-thousand dollars from saturday’s event.  141 organizations participated in the event, which spans 5-miles across west cliff drive. for more information, visit       human race s c dot org.


wville 7-11 robbery 05/14/12 0600 e.a.

watsonville police officers are looking for those responsible for the robbery of a east lake avenue 7-11 store early this morning.  3 suspects entered the store just after 1 a.m.    the subjects, described as “obviously under 21 years of age”, each took packages of beer and walked towards the exit.  when the clerk contacted them, one of the suspects threatened the employee with a knife.  all 3 suspects fled the east lake avenue location on foot.  anyone with any information on this robbery is asked to contact the watsonville police department.
