CLAUER SENTENCED-3/16/14-2232-PMD

A SANTA CRUZ MAN WAS SENTENCED TO 50 YEARS IN PRISON.    66 YEAR OLD JOHN CLAUER WAS FOUND GUILTY IN JANUARY, OF THE APRIL 2011 MURDER OF 30 YEAR HEATHER STEARN IN HIS EAST CLIFF DRIVE APARTMENT.  THE MURDER WENT UNNOTICED FOR 2 WEEKS UNTIL NEIGHBORS COMPLAINED OF THE STENCH. INVESTIGATORS FOUND STEARNS BODY IN CLAUER’S BED. CLAUER WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE UNTIL HE IS OVER 100 YEARS OLD.

PINTO LAKE ELECTRO FISHING-3/16/14-2232-PMD

THE CITY OF WATSONVILLE IS SCHEDULED TO TRY A NEW TECHNIQUE TO BRING DOWN THE NUMBERS OF CARP IN PINTO LAKE.   BEGINNING IN APRIL THE CITY WILL START ELECTRO-FISHING CARP IN THE 8-THOUSAND YEAR OLD LAKE. THE GOAL IS TO BRING DOWN THE NUMBERS OF CARP BY TWO THIRDS IN AN EFFORT TO CONTROL TOXIC BACTERIA LEVELS RELATED TO CARP POPULATION. ELECTRO-FISHING IS CONSIDERED 1 OF THE SAFEST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAYS TO SELECTIVELY FISH DIFFERENT SPECIES.

MANRESA RESCUE-3/16/14-2202-PMD

3 TEENAGERS WERE RESCUED FROM THE WATERS OFF MANRESA STATE BEACH ON SATURDAY.  AT AROUND 2 P-M A LIFE GUARD SAW 3 TEENAGE BOYS, WHO HAD APPARENTLY BEEN PULLED OUT TO SEA BY A STRONG RIPTIDE, SIGNALING IN DISTRESS. THE LIFE GUARD ALONG WITH A RESCUE SWIMMER FROM THE APTOS/ LASELVA FIRE DEPARTMENT USED FLOATATION DEVICES TO GET THE YOUTHS TO SAFETY.  A STATE PARKS SPOKESPERSON SAID THAT BEACH GOERS MUST BE AWARE OF THEIR SWIMMING ABILITIES, AND HEED POSTED RIPTIDE WARNINGS.

ABC classes-3/16/14-1104-PMD

the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has awarded a grant to the Watsonville Police Department to reduce alcohol-related crimes and issues in the city, this includes preventative and educational programs such as LEAD (Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs)  training.  the a-b-c will be holding a 4 hour LEAD seminar at the Watsonville Community Room located on the 4th floor of the Civic Plaza, 275 Main Street, on March 18th from 12 PM to 4 PM. This workshop is free of charge.   Local business owners with alcohol licenses and/or their employees are encouraged to attend.   a Certificate of Completion will be issued to those participants who attend and complete the course.

WATSVLL ABC STING-3/16/14-1032-PMD

a Shoulder Tap Operation IN Watsonville resultED in 5 arrestsFRIDAY NIGHT. the Watsonville Police Department in partnership with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control conducted THE STING, USING minorS for decoys.  THE 5 adults ARRESTED were cited for purchasing THE alcohol and released.  The police reports will be forwarded to the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office for filing. THE STINGS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH JUNE.
