SANTA CRUZ COUNTY PARKS ARE EXPERIENCING A BOOST IN TOURISM WHICH IS BEING ATTRIBUTED TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN.  PARKS LIKE HENRY COWELL AND BIG BASIN HAVE SEEN UP TO TWICE THE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS TIME OF YEAR.  ROARING CAMP RAILROAD HAS rEPORTED ABOUT A 10 PERCENT RISE IN VISITORS AND IS OPENLONGER HOURS AND ADDED EXTRA TRAINS. THE BOOST CAME AFTER NATIONAL PARKS LIKE YOSEMITE AND THE PINNACLES NATIONAL MONUMENT HAVE BEEN CLOSED TO TOURISTS.

CONTRACTOR STING-10/13/13-9:45-PMD

A STING OPERATION OF BUILDING CONTRACTORS IN MONTEREY COUNTY NETTED 18 ARRESTS.  AN UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATION, BY CALIFORNIA’S CONTRACTORS’ LICENSING BOARD, USED AGENTS POSING AS HOME OWNERS NEEDING IMPROVEMENTS OR REPAIRS, THEN CHECKED OUT PEOPLE CLAIMING TO BE CONTRACTORS.  18 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH OPERATING WITHOUT A LICENSE. SOME RECEIVED ADDITIONAL CHARGES SUCH AS, ILLEGAL ADVERTISING, OVERCHARGING, AND OPERATING WITHOUT INSURANCE. THE OPERATION HAS RESULTED IN 75 ARRESTS STATE WIDE.

watsonville police discovered a hash oil lab last week.   officers conducting a probation compliance search at edgar rubio’s home on lassen way on thursday, uncovered the operation which uses highly volitile chemicals to make hash oil from marijuana leaf. there have been 3 explosions or fires linked to hash oil production around the monterey bay in the last 3 weeks.  rubio who wasn’t home at the time of the search is now wanted on drug production charges.

BODY IN FIRE-10/11/13-17:43-PMD

 A  BODY WAS FOUND FOLLOWING AN EARLY MORNING FIRE IN WATSONVILLE ON FRIDAY.  FIRE CREWS RESPONDED TO A 2:30 A-M CALL ON THE 1 HUNDRED BLOCK OF PIONEER ROAD.  IT TOOK FIREFIGHTERS UNTIL AFTER 4 A-M TO EXTINGUISH THE 2 STORY BARN THAT HAD BEEN CONVERTED TO A RESIDENCE. FIRE INVESTIGATORS FOUND THE REMAINS OF CHARRED MALE BODY SIFTING THROUGH THE ASHES. THE REMAINS WERE TURNED OVER TO THE CORONERS OFFICE. THE FIRE DOES NOT APPEAR SUSPICIOUS; HOWEVER OFFICIALS SAY THE BUILDING WAS NOT APPROVED AS A RESIDENCE.

SALINAS 187-10/11/13-17:13-PMD

A MAN WAS SHOT TO DEATH IN SALINASFRIDAY AFTERNOON.  THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ON BELLEHAVEN STREET, SOURCES SAY THAT A 35 YEAR OLD MAN WAS PARKED WHEN ANOTHER CAR PULLED UP AND OPENED FIRE. WITNESSES REPORTED HEARING UP TO 5 SHOTS.  THE MAN WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE BY FIRST RESPONDERS. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE SHOOTING AS GANG RELATED.  THIS WAS SALINAS’S 20TH MURDER OF THE YEAR.
