THE CORONER HAS IDENTIFIED THE MAN FOUND BURNED TO DEATH AT THE PACIFC GROVE GOLF COURSE YESTERDAY (SUN) MORNING AS 56 YEAR OLD RICHARD HAFNER. HAFNER’S CAR WAS FOUND NEARBY AND OFFICIALS SAID THEY COULD SMELL SOME TYPE OF FLAMMABLE LIQUID. POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT BUT HAVE NOT RULED OUT FOUL PLAY. AUTOPSY RESULTS HAVE NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.
ROAD CLOSURES BEGAN TODAY ON HIGHLAND WAY, NORTH OF CORRALITOS. THE CLOSURE WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM
9 A-M AND 4:30 P-M TOMORROW (TUES) AND WEDNESDAY. TRAFFIC WILL ONLY BE ALLOWED TO PASS FOR 10 MINUTES AT 11 A-M, 1 P-M, AND 3 P-M. THE CLOSURE IS NECESSARY FOR GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR FUTURE STORM DAMAGE REPAIR WORK. THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS IS ASKING MOTORISTS TO AVOID THE AREA ID POSSIBLE, OR BE PREPARED FOR DELAYS OF UP TO 2 HOURS.
Monterey County Motorists can expect delays this week due to planned closures for tree removal projects. Tomorrow and Wednesday city tree crews will be removing and trimming trees along Munras Avenue near Soledad Drive from Via Zaragosa to Via Arboles. The work will take place in traffic medians from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Santa Cruz Volunteer Center is asking the community for their help this holiday season in supporting local families by adopting a family-in-need. Iindividuals, families, business, clubs or churches are invited to open their hearts by adopting one of the 400 struggling families dealing with poverty, homelessness or the effects of a slow economy to meet their basic needs by providing food and warm winter clothing. A public forum will be held tonight for local and state education leaders to hear from Salinas residents on how to invest funding from a new law. The event is part of the California Endowment’s School Success Express Tour, a 12-city series of community forums where parents and students are invited to help shape implementation of the recently passed Fair School Funding Law. The meeting will be held at Los Padres Elementary School, on 1130 John Street in Salinas at 6 p.m. and the public is invited.
