A HOLLISTER WOMAN IS SLATED TO BE ARRAIGNMENT NEXT MONTH ON CHARGES OF EMBEZZLING MONEY FROM A PET ORGANIZATION.  AUTHORITIES SAY IVY VELLEGAS BORGES STOLE OVER SIXTY-THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE NATIONAL NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION, AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG RESCUE INCORPORATED. BORGES, WHO WAS THE TREASURER FOR THE ORGANIZATION, IS BEING CHARGED WITH FIVE FELONY ACCOUNTS OF GRAND THEFT EMBEZZLEMENT THAT OCCURRED DURING A 5-YEAR SPAN, BETWEEN 2007 AND 2012. BORGES WILL BE ARRAIGNED ON SEPTEMBER 10TH.

SC FALLEN OFFICERS SCHOLARSHIPS 08-21-2013 07:00 av

A SCHOLARSHIP HAS BEEN AWARDED TO THREE CENTRAL COAST COLLEGE STUDENTS IN HONOR OF TWO FALLEN OFFICERS AND A DEPUTY.  THE SANTA CRUZCOUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF’S ASSOCIATION AWARDED TREVOR CARNEYCHELSEA MEDINA AND ZOE SILVA WITH A $1,000 SCHOLARSHIP.    THE THREE WERE OUT OF ELEVEN APPLICANTS WHO SUBMITTED AN ESSAY THAT WAS REVIEWED AND JUDGED BY MEMBERS OF THE ASSOCIATION.   THE SCHOLARSHIPS HONOR SANTA CRUZ POLICE DETECTIVES, SGT. "BUTCH" BAKER AND ELIZABETH BUTLER ALONG WITH DEPUTY MIKE GRAY, WHO WAS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN 1983. THE SCHOLARSHIPS WERE REPORTEDLY MADE AVAILABLE TO FAMILIES OF ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN the COUNTY AS A WAY TO HELP YOUNG ADULTS REACH THEIR GOALS IN HOPES OF GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

7  CASES  OF  PERTUSSIS (BETTER  KNOWN  AS  WHOOPING  COUGH)  HAVE  BEEN  REPORTED  IN  PACIFIC  GROVE.      THE  HIGHLY  CONTAGIOUS  BACTERIAL  DISEASE,  WHICH  CAN  BE  SPREAD  VIA  COUGHING AND  SNEEZING,   CAN  BE  PREVENTED  WITH  A  VACCINATION.       MOST  OF  THE CURRENT CASES  ARE  IN  ADOLESCENTS.      THE  SYMPTOMS  OF  WHOOPING COUGH MAY  INCLUDE  A  RUNNY  NOISESNEEZING,  AND  A  MILD  COUGH……THAT  DEVELOPS  INTO  SEVERE  COUGHING  FITS  WITHIN  A  COUPLE  WEEKS.    CHILDREN  YOUNGER  THAN  6  MONTHS  OLD  ARE  AT  THE  GREATEST  RISK  OF  COMPLICATIONS  FROM  THE  DISEASE,   AND  ONE  OF  THOSE  COMPLICATIONS  CAN  BE  PNEUMONIA.

INSTEAD  OF  CONTINUING  TO  TRY  AND  GET  APPROVAL  FOR  A  CONTROVERSIAL  DESALINATION  PLANT IN  SANTA  CRUZ,   IT  LOOKS  AS  THOUGH  THE  CITY  WILL  INSTEAD  WORK  WITH  THE  PUBLIC  ON  TRYING  TO  COME  UP  WITH  OTHER  WAYS  TO  SAFEGUARD  THE  CITY’S  DRAUGHT-PRONE  WATER  SUPPLY.   THAT  DECISION  WAS  MADE  BECAUSE  MORE  THAN  400  COMMENTS  WERE  SENT  IN  (DURING  THE  COMMENT  PERIOD  THAT  ENDED  AUGUST 12TH),   AND  MANY  OF  THOSE  REPORTEDLY  QUESTIONED  THE  NEED  FOR  AN  ADDITIONAL  WATER  SUPPLY.      A  “DRAFT  COMMUNITY  INVOLVEMENT  PLAN” IS  NOW  EXPECTED  TO  BE  PUT  TOGETHER  BY  THE  END  OF  THIS  YEAR.

AN  ANTIQUE  CAR  WAS  STOLEN  DURING  MONTEREY CAR  WEEK.      THE  1961  RED  CHEVY  IMPALA IS  SAID  TO  HAVE  BEEN  IN  MONTEREY’S  FISHERMAN’S  WHARF WATERFRONT  LOT  NUMBER  1….AND  WAS  REPORTEDLY  TAKEN  SOMETIME  SATURDAY  NIGHT  OR  SUNDAY  MORNING.       THE IMPALA, THAT  IS  THE  ONLY  KNOWN 1961  SUPER  SPORT  CONVERTIBLE TO  STILL  HAVE  ALL  ITS  ORIGINAL  PARTS,   IS  VALUED  AT  220 THOUSAND  DOLLARS.
