SALINAS CYCLIST DIES FROM INJURIES 3-17-14 1700 OG

THE SALINAS MAN WHO WAS HIT BY A CAR ON MARCH 4TH HAS DIED FROM HIS INJURIES. 70-YEAR OLD JOSE VELASQUEZ WAS RIDING HIS BICYCLE IN THE AREA OF NORTH DAVID ROAD AND WEST LAUREL DRIVE JUST BEFORE 5 A-M WHEN A 38-YEAR OLD MOTORIST REPORTEDLY CAME UPON HIM LYING IN THE LEFT TURN LANE OF THE INTERSECTION. THE DRIVER STRUCK VELASQUEZ, CAUSING MAJOR INJURIES. SALINAS POLICE ARE STILL TRYING TO RECONSTRUCT THE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT AND ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO MAY HAVE WITNESSED THE ACCIDENT TO CONTACT THEM.

HOLLISTER TEEN DROWNS AT PANTHER 3-17-14 1715 OG

A 19-YEAR OLD HOLLISTER RESIDENT DIED ON SUNDAY. AT AROUND 2:20 P-M, RICHARD BELTRAN WAS REPORTEDLY CLIMBING ON ROCKS AT PANTHER BEACH, A REMOTE BEACH, NORTH OF SANTA CRUZ, BETWEEN SANTA CRUZ AND DAVENPORT, WHEN HE SLIPPED AND FELL INTO THE WATER. HIS FRIENDS ALERTED RESCUERS, WHO PULLED HIM OUT OF THE WATER, BUT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REVIVE HIM. A HIGH SURF ADVISORY WAS IN EFFECT WHEN BELTRAN FELL INTO THE WATER.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY IS WARNING THE PUBLIC OF ENERGY REPRESENTATIVES SELLING DOOR TO DOOR.    SALESPEOPLE FROM COMMERCE ENERGY OF HOUSTON, TEXAS HAVE BEEN ASKING RESIDENTS TO SWITCH FROM PG&E TO THEIR COMPANY FOR LOWER RATES.     OFFICIALS ISSUED THE WARNING AFTER A CAPITOLA RESIDENT REPORTED SHE WAS BEING BILLED FOR BOTH PG&E AND COMMERCE ENERGY AFTER SIGNING A CONTRACT.      UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, OFFICIALS FOUND MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST THE HOUSTON COMPANY NATIONWIDE.

THE CENTRAL COAST HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING A RISE OF BOATS SMUGGLING DRUGS FROM MEXICO.    PANGAS, OR MEXICAN FISHING BOATS, CARRYING MORE THAN TWO-THOUSAND POUNDS OF MARIJUANA HAVE BEEN MAKING THEIR WAY UP THE COAST.    RECENTLY THESE CARTEL-HIRED BOATS HAVE BEEN DROPPING OFF SHIPMENTS IN SANTA CRUZ AND MONTEREY COUNTIES.    OFFICIALS SAY THE DRUGS ARE DELIVERED TO SHORE TO BE DISTRIBUTED IN THE MIDWEST. AUTHORITIES ARE ENCOURAGING BOATERS TO REPORT SUSPICIOUS PANGAS BY CALLING 9-1-1 OR V-H-F CHANNEL 16 ON WATER.
