The Santa Cruz area CHP will be conducting a DUI checkpoint tomorrow night in an undisclosed location. The California Highway Patrol’s office says the checkpoint is an effort to combat the losses caused by impaired drivers and to assist with the reduction of injury and fatal collisions. 802 people were killed as the result of an alcohol-related collision in California during 2011, over 12,000 people were injured, while C-H-P officers made over 91,000 arrests that same year.
Two people were arrested in Greenfield following a police pursuit last night. A 1998 Gold Mazda driven by a man with several outstanding felony arrest warrants, was spotted by officers traveling on Elm Avenue at 6:02 p.m. Police attempted a traffic stop, but say the driver Israel Cota sped off at a high rate speed through several neighborhoods, before slowing down at Elm and Second Street, where police say Cota and Maria Sanchez jumped out and ran in different directions. A brief foot chase ensued. Both were arrested without incident on multiple charges.
Salinas Police are planning to step up enforcement efforts in the wake of the city’s 7th pedestrian fatality this week. Officers are being encouraged to issue more jaywalking tickets, and fine drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians. Officials say a lack of patrol officers could be a contributing factor to the increase in pedestrian fatalities, but also say that drivers and pedestrians need to be more careful. They urge pedestrians, even if they have the right of way, to look both ways and to make eye contact with the driver. They also ask people to press the button at the crosswalk and wait until it’s safe to walk.
A man who was reported missing from San Jose on Christmas Eve, was located early yesterday morning in Salinas. According to San Jose Police, 79-year old Howard Kupfer was last seen at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in Morgan Hill. He was reported missing after he missed an engagement with family members Wednesday. Kupfer was found in safe condition at about 4 a.m.
A county wide search lead to the arrest of Six robbery suspects yesterday afternoon in Salinas. Monterey County sheriff’s Deputies say most of the people had a connection to an armed and attempted robbery in Soledad and Gonzales. Witnesses at the crime scene were able to report the suspect vehicle”s license plate to authorities, who found the white van on Airport Road and Skyway Boulevard. Deputies say two of them were adults while four of the suspects were juveniles.
