Melky Cabrera Suspended 8/15/12 12.30p AF

Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was suspended by Major League Baseball this morning for the use of performance enhancing drugs.    Cabrera tested positive for Testosterone, and will now have to sit out the next 50 games without pay.     With only 45 games left, this decision effectively ends his season.     Cabrera issued a statement apologizing for his mistake, saying he let down fans and his teammates.    Cabrera was name MVP of the all-star game, and has started 110 of the last 117 Giants games.

Man Threatens Ex-Wife 8/15/12 10.50a AF

A Salinas man was arrested last night after his ex-wife reported that he had made death threats against her.     42-year-old Cesar Virgen reportedly called his ex-wife and made threatening remarks regarding her and her new boyfriend.    He has also allegedly threatened to kill anyone who might get in his way, including police.      Virgen’s ex-wife contacted police last night after he told her he was coming to her house to collect his passport.    The victim said that Virgen had commented on the Aurora, Colorado shootings, and said if he were to do something like that, he would flee the country.      Salinas Police contacted Virgen at his business on Simas St. and arrested him without incident.     They found a .22 caliber handgun at that location, and a rifle at Virgen’s other business.     He was booked into Monterey County Jail on charges of making criminal threats for $500,000 bail.

Salinas Wal-Mart Robbed 8/15/12 10.30a AF

Salinas Police responded to a robbery at the Wal-Mart on North Main Street last night.     The robber entered the store around 10:30pm and approached a clerk at a front check-out counter.   He then pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and threatened to shoot the clerk if he did not open the register.   The clerk complied, and the suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.     He ran to the parking lot where he reportedly got into a newer black sedan and drove off.    The suspect is described as a man between 25 and 30, last seen wearing an LA Dodgers hat with a dark blue windbreaker and khaki pants.    He also had a thick goatee.   Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Salinas Police Department.

Man Turns Himself in After Television Segment 8/15/12 10.a AF

A Salinas man turned himself into police after seeing his photo on a television segment titled “Manhunt Monday.”      18-year-old Diego Javier Reyes saw his photo on the KION News segment that listed him as wanted for the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl.     Reyes met the girl approximately 2 months ago on Facebook.   The two went to a house where the alleged sexual abuse occurred.   The teen’s parents took her to a hospital following the encounter, and then notified Salinas Police.    Reyes surrendered to police on Tuesday and was booked into Monterey County jail on two counts of sexual abuse with a minor.
