bullet hits xmas tree 12/20/11 0700 E.A.

two teenagers and a 28 year old man were arrested early friday morning, after allegedly firing shots into a freedom area home.  a bullet from a .22-caliber rifle struck a christmas tree inside a home on the 200 block of manfre just after midnight.  santa cruz county sherif’s deputies found two 16-year olds and 28 year old miguel angel sanchez espinoza at a home in the area.  sanchez espinoza was booked into santa cruz county jail on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.  the juveniles were arrested on suspicion of firing into a dwelling.  no one was injured in the gang-motivated shooting.

salinas crime down in 2011 12/20/11 0700 E.A.

the city of salinas saw a drop in its overall reported violent crime in the first half of 2011.  from january to june 2011, homicides, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault dropped by 11.4 percent, according to a preliminary semiannual uniform crime report released by the f.b.i..    while reports of robbery and aggravated assault were down, reports of murder and rape were up from the first half of 2010.  property crime numbers in salinas followed a national trend which showed a 3.7 percent overall decline.

THE   NAME  OF  THE  SALINAS  WOMAN,  WHO  DIED  SUNDAY  IN  A  SOLO  VEHICLE  ACCIDENT  ON  OLD  STAGE  ROAD,  HAS  BEEN  RELEASED.     42  YEAR-OLD  TARA  McKAY  IS  BELIEVED  TO  HAVE  LOST  CONTROL  OF  HER  VEHICLE  WHILE  DRIVING  NORTHBOUND  (JUST  SOUTH  OF  OLD  NATIVIDAD  ROAD).     HER   PICK-UP  TRUCK  HIT  A  FENCE  AND  THEN  A  TREE.      

Gilroy home invasion 12/19/11 9:15 p.m. TDH

Gilroy police officers arrested a man on Sunday for home-invasion robbery.   Neighbors helped subdue the man before officers arrived, after they saw him fleeing from a house on 5th street.  the homeowner had come home to discover alex chavez stealing items from her residence.  The victim gave chase, and others followed the suspect for a block, before he was caught.  The victim was able to recover her property.

 

DUI leads to murder charge 12/19/11 9p.m. TDH

A Watsonville man accused of being drunk when he crashed his car on highway-183 has been ordered to stand trial for murder.  29-year-old melquiadez mota Gomez was already on probation for D-U-I, when he crashed into another vehicle on September 25th.    Gomez was reportedly passing cars on the shoulder and in the opposing lane.   That’s when he struck a vehicle being driven by salinas resident Gustavo quintero.   The 44-year-old died at the scene.    Prosecutors in monterey county are more frequently pursuing murder charges against drunk drivers whose accidents cause death.
