Sal. Peace Rally Sat. 09/17/10 3:45pm TDH

Young Salinas residents are scheduled to hold a rally tomorrow(Sat), to promote a message of peace.   The Salinas Youth Rally for Peace comes a week after another wave of shootings in the city, during which the victims were all younger than 25.   The free peace rally is expected to include free food, music, and prizes.   The event is scheduled for tomorrow at 11 a.m., at the Vineyard Church field on East Alisal street.    Organizers encourage residents of all ages to come out and rally in support of peace.

STATEWIDE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FALLS 09-17-10 12:00 a.v.

According to new data released today, the state unemployment rate went up slightly last month. The statewide rate in August fell to 12.4% compared to 12.3% for the month of July. Meanwhile, local unemployment rates fared better during the month of August. In Monterey County, the unemployment rate during August was 10.5%, down from 10.8% in July, in Santa Cruz County, the unemployment rate also saw a drop in August, down to 11% from an 11.4% mark in July, and in San Benito County, the local unemployment rate was down to 14.8% in August from 15.6% in July. Over 2.26 million people are unemployed in California, according to the new study, that’s up 11,000 over the month and an increase of 81,000 compared to August of 2009.

PRELIM HEARING/SALINAS OFFICER 09-17-10 11:40 a.v.

A preliminary hearing is slated today for a Salinas police officer charged with grand theft and financial elder abuse. Sergeant Jay Malispina is accused of committing the crimes against his 70-year old mother over a 4-year period beginning in 2004. Malispina pleaded not guilty to the charges in January. Today’s hearing determines whether there is enough evidence to proceed with a criminal case.

HWYS 25 & 156 PAVING WORK 09-17-10 11:10 a.v.

Paving work on Highway 25 from the San Benito County line to Highway-101 and on Highway-156 from the county line to Highway-152, started today. The work, which is expected to last well into the end of October, will be done before and after commute hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday though Thursday evenings. Construction work includes grinding out existing surfaces and replacing it with a new layer of asphalt, installing rumble strips on the centerline in all the locations, and building dikes on shoulders for better drainage.

MCO DUI CHECKPOINTS (TONIGHT) 09-17-10 10:40 a.v.

A DUI checkpoint will be conducted tonight in several cities in Monterey County . The city of Salinas will hold a checkpoint from 6 p.m. to midnight, and in the Greenfield and King City areas, a checkpoint will be conducted from 6 to 10 p.m. During the Salinas checkpoint, officers will be distributing fliers for the we-tip-anonymous crime-reporting phone line.
