Salinas Shooting, Sunday 02/20/11 11p.m. TDH

2-teenagers were shot at in Salinas on Sunday night, in front of an apartment complex on the 3-hundred block of Hayes Street.   Neither of the victims was hit in the 8:24-p.m. incident.   The 15-year-olds told Salinas Police that they were approached by 2-men, who asked them their gang affiliation.  The victims said they had none, and tried to flee.  They were shot at between 2 and 4 times, but were not injured.   Police could not find any property damage either.  They are still looking for the suspects.

UCSC Professor Grant 02/20/11 10:45p.m. TDH

A U.C.S.C. Scientist has been awarded a 50-thousand dollar grant, to continue his work on genome research.  Assistant Professor Richard Edward Green was given the 2-year-grant by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation last week.  He was recognized for his work on the Neanderthal Genome Project, which helped identify a previously unknown human-like species.   Green plans to use the money to continue several research projects, including studying the d-n-a of alligators.

Gonzales Apartment Fire 02/20/11 10:45p.m. TDH

Firefighters in Gonzales were able to contain a fire in an apartment on Saturday night.  Crews responded to the 9 p.m. blaze on the     5-hundred block of Fanoe Road, and found a living room on fire.  The flames were extinguished, and no injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Salinas Shooting 02/20/11 10:45p.m. TDH

Nobody was injured when shots were fired into an occupied car in Salinas on Saturday.  Salinas Police are still looking for the shooter, who fired the shots at 2-people at San Benito Street and South Madeira Avenue.   Police are investigating whether the shooter was involved in an altercation in a bar prior to the incident.

Stabbing Arrest 02/20/11 1p.m. TDH

A 21-year-old Watsonville man was arrested early Saturday morning, after allegedly stabbing another man in the face.   Sergio Suarez was taken into custody at a residence on Willow Creek Street.  He had allegedly returned home, after stabbing the victim nearby, at Pennsylvania Drive.   The 22-year-old victim suffered a cut to the right side of his face, he was treated at a local hospital and released.
