Watsonville Plaza Name Change 10/08/10 0700 E.A.

A proposal to change the name of Watsonville Plaza has been withdrawn. Watsonville Mayor Luis Alejo proposed changing the name to Delores Huerta Plaza, but has taken that proposal off the table in the face of strong community opposition. Another location to be named in honor of Delores Huerta is currently being considered.

CA. PASSES MAIN BUDGET BILL 10-08-10 08:00 a.v.

he State Senate ended a 100th day budget impasse today by passing a main budget bill within a legislative package. California lawmakers reportedly worked through the night reaching an agreement just hours ago. The Senate’s vote comes more than 3 months after the start of the fiscal year, as the state was preparing to issue I-O-Us to state contractors. The Senate’s approval came hours after the Assembly acted yesterday. The 87.5 billion dollar general fund spending plan is nearly 16-billion dollars less than the general fund just 3 years ago.

UCSC RALLIES AGAINST BUDGET CUTS 10-08-10 07:00 a.v.

In response to fee hikes and budget cuts, U.C. Santa Cruz students, faculty and employees staged a rally at the University yesterday. As part of a National Day of Action to Defend Public Education, over 200 people attended the noon rally at Quarry Plaza to hear student leaders, politicians and faculty protest cuts to education. Similar rallies were held yesterday in Watsonville and in downtown Santa Cruz in support of greater funding for public schools.

FORMER FORT ORD BURN – UPDATED 2 10-08-10 06:20 a.v.

A prescribed burn, to clear unexploded ammunition, took place yesterday morning on the Former Fort Ord. Roughly 110-acres burned for about 2-hours until just before noon at Burn Unit 21. The Presidio of Monterey Fire Department is said to be monitoring the area, through this morning. A 2nd prescribed burn of about 167 acres may also take place today at Burn Unit 15 for about 2 hours, weather permitting. Officials recommend closing your windows if you live on or near the Former Fort Ord. More information can be found at fort ord clean up dot com.

CAPITOLA APPROVES NEW TARGET STORE 10-08-10 05:40 a.v.

In a 3-to-1 vote last night, the Capitola Planning Commission approved plans for a new Target store to take over the space formerly occupied by Gottschalks at the Capitola Mall on 41st Avenue.   Plans for the 104,000-square-foot building include remodeling the interior and exterior, including new landscaping.  The new Target, which is expected to employ up to 250 people, will be 2 levels and will include 10,000 square feet of grocery space.
