SEAWATER INTRUSION IN SOQUEL 2-3-14 1910 OG

THE SOQUEL WATER DISTRICT WANTS ITS USERS TO “DO MORE TO USE LESS”.     DURING THIS DROUGHT, MORE WATER IS BEING USED THAN IS GOING BACK INTO THE BASIN, WHICH ALLOWS FOR SEAWATER INTRUSION.    BECAUSE SEAWATER IS HEAVIER THAN FRESH WATER, THE SEAWATER CAN PUSH RIGHT THROUGH.     THIS ISSUE IS CRITICAL, EVEN AFTER THE DROUGHT ENDS, AS SEAWATER CANNOT BE USED FOR DRINKING NOR IRRIGATION AND THE LEVELS OF INTRUSION ARE NOT EASILY RESOLVED.     THE DISTRICT’S 75 WELLS ARE CLOSELY MONITORED YEAR-ROUND AND THEY HAVE ALREADY FOUND INTRUSION, BUT NOT IN THEIR PRODUCTION WELLS YET.     THE SOQUEL WATER DISTRICT IS LOOKING INTO LONG-TERM RESOLUTIONS.

FIRST MEASURABLE RAINS 2-3-14 1720 OG

WHILE WREAKING HAVOC ON CENTRAL COAST HIGHWAYS, SUNDAY’S FIRST DECENT RAINFALL IN MONTHS WAS A WELCOME SIGHT FOR OUR REGION POTENTIALLY FACING A SEVERE WATER SHORTAGE AND MANDATORY CUTBACKS AND RATIONING.     ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE, MONTEREY AND SANTA CRUZ COUNTIES RECEIVED NEARLY HALF AN INCH OF RAIN ON SUNDAY. IT WAS THE MOST THE COUNTIES HAVE SEEN IN A YEAR.

STILL, THE RAINFALL DID LITTLE TO FIX THE WATER SUPPLY ISSUE OVERALL AND PEOPLE ARE STILL ENCOURAGED TO FIND WAYS TO CUT WATER USAGE.     TIPS INCLUDE TAKING SHORTER SHOWERS, WATERING LANDSCAPING LESS, NOT PRE-RINSING DISHES BEFORE USING THE DISHWASHER, AND DOING LARGER LOADS OF LAUNDRY.

WHEN SANTA CRUZ POLICE DETECTIVES,  SERGEANT LORAN BAKER AND DETECTIVE ELIZABETH BUTLER WERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY NEARLY A YEAR AGO, DONATIONS WERE SENT IN FROM THE COMMUNITY TO TWO SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS FOR THE FALLEN OFFICERS’ FAMILIES.     THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE OFFICER’S ASSOCIATION UNION WAS GIVEN THE TASK OF MANAGING THE MONEY.     TO DATE, NO FUNDS HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED TO THE FAMILIES.     THE DELAY IS REPORTEDLY DUE TO A DISAGREEMENT BY A BAKER FAMILY MEMBER ON HOW THE MONEY IS TO BE SPLIT.     THE UNION WANTS TO SPLIT THE FIVE-HUNDRED-FIFTY-SIX-THOUSAND DOLLARS EQUALLY BETWEEN THE TWO FAMILIES AND THEN HAVE THE FAMILIES DISTRIBUTE ACCORDINGLY.  THE UNION HAS ASKED FOR AN AGREEMENT BY FEBRUARY 21ST.      SERGEANT BAKER LEFT BEHIND A WIFE AND THREE GROWN CHILDREN WHILE DETECTIVE BUTLER LEFT BEHIND HER LONG-TIME DOMESTIC PARTNER,  PETER, AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN.
