Missing Girl Found Safe 01/02/11 11:30pm TDH

A brief search for a missing teenager in Santa Cruz ended successfully on Saturday.  15-year-old Priscilla Maldonado was reported missing just after midnight on New Year’s Morning, after she had become separated from her family.  The Los Banos family was in Santa Cruz to celebrate New Year’s.   Santa Cruz Police conducted a city-wide search, and found Maldonado’s dog, before locating Priscilla in a house in Santa Cruz at 12:30 p.m.  She was safely reunited with her family.

Settlement, MCO 12/31/10 6:15pm TDH

5-television makers settled a case yesterday, which ends a consumer-protection lawsuit filed several years ago.   The case was brought by Monterey county, along with 6-other counties, which accused the electronics manufacturers of mis-representing the size of their TV screens.   The settlement allows the companies to disclose the size of their screens to within a tenth of an inch.   And the manufacturers have agreed to pay 1.25-million dollars to cover legal penalties and costs, as well as 1.1-million dollars’ worth of televisions for schools and other public institutions.  Monterey county is expected to receive 163-thousand dollars for legal costs, and 28-thousand dollars in penalties.

1,000,000 Giant Dipper Rides in 2010 12/31/10 5:45pm TDH

2010 was a successful year for the santa cruz beach boardwalk.   At 2:40 this afternoon, the 1-millionth roller coaster rider was recorded.   The million-rider mark was passed when a train of 24 people set out on the Giant Dipper.   The last time the million-rider-mark was passed was in 2002.  Since its opening in 1924, roughly 58-point-4 million rides have been given on the giant dipper, which is a national historic landmark.

S.V. Teen Dies in La. Fire 12/31/10 4:45pm TDH

A Scott’s Valley teenager has been identified as 1-of the victims of a fatal fire in New Orleans.  8 people were killed in the incident on Tuesday morning.   The group of young people had seet a fire in a warehouse to keep warm, however carbon monoxide overpowered at least 4 of the victims.  The fire grew out of control and destroyed the building.  17-year-old Scotts Valley resident Melissa Martinez was among the victims.

LAW  ENFORCEMENT  OFFICIALS  WISH  TO  REMIND  PEOPLE  NOT TO FIRE  CELEBRATORY  SHOTS  UP  INTO  THE AIR…..AS  THOSE  BULLETS  HAVE  A  BAD  HABIT  OF  FALLING  BACK  DOWN….OFTEN  TIME  INJURING PEOPLE  OR  DAMAGING  PROPERTY.    “CELEBRATORY  SHOTS”  BEING  FIRED  INTO  THE  AIR,    AND  DRIVING  UNDER  THE  INFLUENCE,    ARE  2  OF  THE  LARGER  AVOIDABLE THREATS  TO  SAFETY….ESPECIALLY  ON  HOLIDAYS  SUCH  AS  NEW  YEAR’S  EVE AND  THE   4TH OF  JULY.
