DMV AND SALINAS POLICE -4/3/14-1921-PMD

THE SALINAS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS GETTING HELP FROM THE D-M-V.   THE HELP COMES IN THE FORM OF A HOT LIST.  EVERY 2 WEEKS STARTING ON MARCH 28TH THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES HAS BEEN SENDING THE SALINAS POLICE A LIST.  THE LIST CONTAINS THE NAMES, ADDRESSES, AND VEHICLE TYPES OF AREA RESIDENTS WITH 2 OR MORE D-U-I CONVICTIONS AND WHOSE LICENSES ARE UNDER SUSPENSION.  POLICE WILL THEN PERFORM STAKE OUTS IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET THE ROUGHLY 75 PERCENT OF D-U-I SUSPENDED DRIVERS WHO CONTINUE DRIVE ANYWAY.

SV ROBBERY AND ACCIDENT -4/3/14-1841-PMD

A SCOTTS VALLEY GAS STATION WAS ROBBED SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT EARLY THURSDAY MORNING.   POLICE SOURCES SAY AN INTOXICATED MAN ENTERED A MOUNT HERMON GAS STATION, AND THREATENED THE CLERK WHO HAD REFUSED TO SELL HIM ALCOHOL.  THE SUSPECT THEN TOOK BEER AND FLED WITHOUT PAYING.  ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER THE MAN WRECKED HIS CAR AND WAS LIFE FLIGHTED TO A BAY AREA HOSPITAL. BOTH THE ROBBERY AND ACCIDENT REMAIN UNDER INVESTIGATION.

SOQUEL WATER FINES-4/3/14-1841-PMD

THE SOQUEL WATER DISTRICTS MANAGING BOARD APPROVED A PLAN TO REDUCE WATER USE.   THE PLAN TARGETS THE ROUGHLY 50 PERCENT OF THE DISTRICTS USERS, WHICH ARE USING MORE THAN 75 GALLONS OF WATER A DAY.   WHEN FULLY IMPLEMENTED, SOQUEL WATER DISTRICT CUSTOMERS WILL BE OFFERED INCENTIVES FOR USING WATER SAVING TECHNOLOGIES. THERE COULD ALSO BE FINES LEVIED FOR EXCESSIVE WATER USE.  THE GOAL OF THE PLAN IS TO REDUCE WATER USE BY 11 PERCENT

THE SHANNON COLLINS MEMORIAL GARDENWILL BE HOLDING MONTHLY GARDEN DAYS.   COLLINS WAS A SANTA CRUZ BUSINESS WOMAN SLAIN OCTOBER OF 2013. THE MEMORIAL GARDEN WHICH IS LOCATED AT THE WOMEN’S CENTER ON THE CORNER OF WALNUT AND CHESTNUT STREETS HAS BEEN HOLDING MONTHLY GARDEN DAYS SINCE OCTOBER. THE NEXT ONE IS THIS SATURDAY, VOLUNTEERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND THE STRAWBERRY PLANTING.

Measles OUTBREAK THREATS-4/3/14-1700-PMD

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY HEALTH OFFICIALS ARE PREPARING FOR A POSSIBLE MEASLES OUTBREAK.  THAT AFTER CASES OF THE HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS DISEASE HAS BEEN REPORTED IN NEARBY COUNTIES AND ACROSS THE STATE.  THERE HAVE BEEN 49 CONFIRMED CASES OF THE MEASLES TO DATE THIS YEAR STATEWIDE. LAST YEAR THERE HAD BEEN 4 CASES IN THE SAME TIME FRAME.  HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY THAT EVERY CASE OF THE DISEASE REQUIRES TRYING TO LOCATE EVERY ONE IN CONTACT WITH THE INFECTED PERSON. THE LAST CASE IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTYWAS IN DECEMBER 2013.
