Shooting (MCO) 05/18/11 7:45a.m. TDH

Authorities in Monterey county are investigating a shooting that took place last night in lockwood.  Nobody was injured in the 11p.m.-incident, when multiple rounds were fire into a house on the 67-thousand block of jolon Road.  The house was unoccupied at the time.   Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the Monterey county sheriff’s department.

UC cuts, meeting 05/18/11 7:30p.m. TDH

UC administrators met with students and teachers yesterday at ucsc, to discuss on-going budget uncertainties.   The u.c.-system is facing 500-million dollars in cuts, including 31-million dollars cut from ucsc.  If certain taxes are not extended in california, the cuts could be double that amount.   Tuition and fees for in-state students has risen by 40-percent in the last 2-years.   Another budget meeting is scheduled to be held at the campus today, at 5:30 p.m., in the oakes college learning center.

Gang Member Arrested, Seaside 05/18/11 6:45a.m. TDH

A man who police believe is an active gang member was arrested this week in seaside.  39-year-old demond harris was taken into custody near fremont and and echo streets, after he abruptly pulled over to avoid being stopped by police officers.   A parole search was conducted, and police say they found cocaine and a stolen revolver in his possession.   Harris was booked into monterey county jail on multiple charges, which carry gang-enhancements.

Salinas council takes cut 05/18/11 6:15a.m. TDH

Salinas city council members agreed to a pay cut yesterday, to try to help the city stay financially afloat.   Council members voted to give themselves a 13-percent cut, after a presentation by an economic consultant suggested that salinas could be facing budget deficits until 2016.   That deficit could rise to 8-point-8 million dollars, unless further action is taken.   Other city management positions also saw their pay slashed, by another 3-percent, bringing their total pay cut to 13-percent from 2009 levels.

Stow Back in Bay Area, Investigation Continues 05/17/11 11:15p.m. TDH

Santa Cruz County resident Bryan Stow arrived in Northern California this week, more than 6-weeks after he was attacked outside of Dodger Stadium.   The attack by 2-unknown men on March 31st left 42-year-old Stow in critical condition.   He was in-and-out of medically induced comas, and underwent several surgeries.   He was transported to the Bay area in a private medical jet on Monday, in order to be hospitalized at San Francisco General Hospital, closer to home; he is still in critical condition.  The 2-men who attacked Stow are still being sought.   A reward of more than 200-thousand dollars is being offered, and billboards have gone up in L.A. seeking the attackers. Police are now looking for a woman who is believed to have helped the attackers escape. The Giants are set to return to L.A. for the first time since the attack on Wednesday.
