SC SHOOTING AND EVASION -5/1/14-2204-PMD

SANTA CRUZ POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A WEDNESDAY EVENING SHOOTING IN A MOTEL PARKING LOT.   OFFICERS SAY THEY WERE ALERTED TO THE SHOOTING BY WITNESSES FLAGGING DOWN PATROL UNITS.  REPORTEDLY OCCUPANTS OF WHITE CAR OPENED FIRE ON 3 MEN IN FRONT OF A MOTEL NEAR CANFIELD AVENUE AND SAN LORENZO BOULEVARD AT AROUND 7:00 P-M.   POLICE ARRIVING ON SCENE GAVE PURSUIT TO THE FLEEING SUSPECT VEHICLE UNTIL ABANDONING THE CHASE ON HIGHWAY 17 OUT OF PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS. A LOADED PISTOL THROWN FROM THE VEHICLE WAS RECOVERED.  NO ONE WAS INJURED BY THE GUNFIRE WHICH STRUCK SEVERAL OCCUPIED ROOMS.   ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION ON THE SHOOTING IS ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE DEPARTMENT.

AUTHORITIES IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTY ARE SEARCHING FOR WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING AND TORTURING A FAMILY PET.   A BOULDER CREEK HOUSEHOLD IN THE AREA OF 2 BAR ROAD AND HIGHWAY 9 FOUND THEIR HOUSE CAT TRAUMATIZED BY WHAT A VETERINARIAN CALLED A SEXUAL ASSAULT WITH A BLUNT OBJECT, THE PET WAS VICTIMIZED SOMETIME BETWEEN 10-A-M SUNDAY AND 10 A-M MONDAY.  A  5- THOUSAND DOLLAR REWARD HAS BEEN OFFERED BY P-E-T-A  FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ASSAULT.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY HEALTH OFFICIALS ISSUED A RABIES HEALTH WARNING AFTER A DEAD BAT TESTED POSITIVE FOR RABIES YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).   THE BAT WAS TURNED OVER TO THE S-P-C-A- ON WEDNESDAY AFTER IT WAS FOUND BY A CHILD. THE BAT TESTED POSITIVE AT THE PUBLIC HEALTH LABORATORY, AND OFFICIALS ISSUED THE WARNING.   THE PUBLIC IS ALSO REMINDED TO KEEP YOUR PETS RABIES VACCINATIONS CURRENT, AND TO EDUCATE CHILDREN TO STAY AWAY FROM DEAD, SICK OR STRANGE ACTING ANIMALS AND TO REPORT THEM TO THE S-P-C-A.

A MAN AND WOMAN FROM MONTEREY COUNTY HAVE PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO 25 COUNTS OF MOLESTATION.     31-YEAR-OLD CLAUDIA OCHOA HAS BEEN ACCUSED OF HELPING 41-YEAR-OLD RUBEN MACIEL RAPE HER 11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER.    AN INVESTIGATION OF THE CASE WAS PROMPTED AFTER THE IMPREGNATED VICTIM VISITED A DOCTOR.   MACIEL AND OCHOA WERE ARRESTED SATURDAY.   A PRELIMINARY HEARING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR MAY 8TH.

CAL FIRE DECLARES BURN BAN- 05-01-14 9:00 SG

CALFIRE IS SUSPENDING ALL OPEN BURNING IN SANTA CRUZ, SAN BENITO, AND MONTEREY COUNTIES EFFECTIVE TODAY (THURS). THE DEPARTMENT EMPHASIZES THAT THE BAN IS NECESSARY FOR PUBLIC SAFETY.    INDUSTRIAL BURNING WILL REQUIRE A SPECIAL PERMIT AS WELL AS A CHECK-IN WITH THE REGIONAL AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT DISTRICT.      WITH ONGOING DROUGHT CONDITIONS, OFFICIALS ASK THE PUBLIC TO TAKE EXTRA CARE TO PREVENT FIRES.
