A FORMER MORGAN HILL TEACHER STANDS ACCUSED OF SLIPPING SLEEPING MEDICATION INTO MULTIPLE TODDLERS SIPPY CUPS. MORGAN HILL POLICE WERE CALLED TO KIDDIE ACADEMY CHILDCARE FACILITY ON MONTEREY ROAD FOR REPORTS OF CHILD ENDANGERMENT. ONCE THERE POLICE LEARNED 59 YEAR-OLD DEBORAH GRATZ WAS FIRED LAST FRIDAY FOR PUTTING AN UNKNOWN SUBSTANCE INTO THE CHILDREN’S DRINKS. REPORTEDLY A WITNESS VIEWED GRATZ PLACE THE SUBSTANCE INTO SOME OF THE CUPS, WHICH LED TO A CONFRONTATION BY FACILITY ADMINISTRATORS. FOLLOWING A SEARCH OF THE TEACHER’S HOME, SHE WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO SANTA CLARA COUNTY JAIL ON FELONY CHILD ENDANGERMENT CHARGES. The Rocky Point restaurant in Big Sur, which has been a destination spot for 60 years held a grand reopening this week after the new owner made a few changes. The cliff top eatery was purchased for $4.75 million back in December, by new owner Peter Wang. Chef Christopher Bony of Casanova in Carmel had joined the staff, and brings his familiarity with French cooking with him. The restaurant opened for lunch Monday, but after and unexpectedly large turnout, has decided to reopen Wednesday morning to do more preparation.
A car stolen from downtown Santa Cruz early Monday morning was found nearby along with the thief. Around 1am someone called the Santa Cruz police department to report a suspicious person near Cayuga Street. When officers arrived they found 28-year-old Jamie Hernandez in a Chevy Tahoe that had been reported stolen very shortly before. A methamphetamine pipe and floor jack was also found in the car. It is believed that Hernandez was trying to take the tires. Hernandez was arrested for vehicle theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.
An act of kindness turned into a crime on Friday when a man’s wallet was stolen by a transient. A 19-year-old Ben Lomond man was walking on Front Street in Santa Cruz around 5:30pm when a homeless man asked him for some money. When he pulled out his wallet to give him a few dollars, 53-year-old Matthew Devecchis grabbed the wallet from his hand and ran. The victim and other observers tackled the thief before he cold escape. Devecchis was arrested on suspicion of robbery.
A man was robbed while walking near the train tracks near Seabright in Santa Cruz on Friday. The 35-year-old man was at the corner of Seabright Avenue and Murray around 11:30pm when he was approached by 4 men. The thieves demanded money from the victim, but when he revealed that he only had $6, they assaulted him. The man’s shoulder was broken as he was pushed onto the tracks.
