Greenfield murder arrest 05/13/12 8p.m. TDH

Greenfield police have identified and arrested a 19-year-old man, in connection with the homicide of a man last week.  Saul Gonzalez junior was initially being treated as a “person of interest” in the case, however he has now been arrested.   Gonzalez is accused of shooting and killing 18-year-old jose barragan last Tuesday, near apple avenue and Hutchinson drive.   Gonzalez was booked into monterey county jail for murder, shooting into an inhabited dwelling, narcotics possession, and gang enhancements.  He is also facing attempted murder charges, because another person was targeted in the assault.

 

Narcotics possession 05/13/12 8p.m. TDH

A 22-year-old man was arrested on narcotics charges in Watsonville early Saturday morning.  Watsonville police officers had initially been contacted about a domestic disturbance, at a residence on the under-100-block of Clifford avenue.  abel chavez fled, however, after they determined that the female victim was alright, officers apprehended him nearby.  He was allegedly in possession of a half-pound of marijuana, 368-ecstasy pills, more than 5 grams of methamphetamine, and over 31-thousand dollars in cash.  Chavez was booked into santa cruz county jail on multiple charges.

 

w.v. stabbing 05/13/12 8p.m. TDH

A 28-year-old man was stabbed late Saturday night, after being involved in a confrontation with a group of men at wagner street and vista Montana drive.  the victim was walking with another man, who managed to get away from the attackers.  The victim was chased down and assaulted near lake avenue.  he was stabbed in the lower abdomen.  The man was airlifted to an out-of-county trauma center, where he underwent emergency surgery.  Watsonville police reported that, As of Sunday, he was listed in stable condition.   Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Watsonville police department.

Salinas students win math honors 05/13/12 8p.m. TDH

Several salinas students won honors at this weekend’s   44th annual mathematics competition on Saturday.  The event at monterey’s naval postgraduate school is hosted annually by the monterey county office of education.  Over 350 students from 41 area schools participated.

 

CA budget deficit grows 05/13/12 8p.m. TDH

Governor jerry brown announced on Saturday that the state’s budget deficit has grown beyond previous projections.  In the governor’s preview of his may budget release, he announced a 16-billion dollar gap between revenue and expenses.  That’s nearly 7-billion dollars higher than the previous projection.  Governor brown is pushing for a series of tax measures to be voted on this fall.  The new shortfall means likely across-the-board cuts.  If voters reject the governor’s tax proposals, the cuts will be increased.
