FELTON WILDFIRE CONTAINED - 08/19/13 18:25 OG

IT TOOK FIREFIGHTERS JUST OVER AN HOUR TO CONTAIN A HALF-ACRE WILDFIRE NEAR EMPIRE GRADE AND FELTON EMPIRE ROAD THIS AFTERNOON.    AFTER SMOKE WAS REPORTED, A HELICOPTER CREW FOUND THE FIRE MOVING SLOWLY UP A HILLSIDE.    THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED BY DROPPING WATER FROM THE AIR,  AND FIRE CREWS WORKING ON THE GROUND.     TRAFFIC WAS STOPPED BRIEFLY ON FELTON EMPIRE ROAD,  AND THEN REDUCED TO ONE LANE AROUND 3 P-M.

NO BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED, NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED, AND THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS STILL BEING INVESTIGATED.

BONNY DOON SCHOOL GOES GREEN - 08/19/13 18:00 OG

AFTER WORKING FOR NEARLY A YEAR,  BONNY DOON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WAS CERTIFIED AS A “GREEN BUSINESS” BY THE MONTEREY BAY AREA GREEN BUSINESS PROGRAM. BOTH STAFF AND STUDENTS ARE FOCUSED ON BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY BY RECYCLING, COMPOSTING, BRINGING LUNCHES IN REUSABLE CONTAINERS, AND RIDING IN A PROPANE-FUELED BUS.  THE SCHOOL WILL ALSO INSTALL LOW-FLOW TOILETS, ENERGY-EFFICIENT LIGHTING, AND SOLAR PANELS OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS TO DECREASE THEIR CARBON FOOTPRINT EVEN MORE.

THE SOLAR PANELS MAY EVEN EVENTUALLY HELP BONNY DOON  ELEMENTARY SAVE MONEY ON IT’S UTILITIES.

TWO CONVICTED IN HATE CRIME - 08/19/13 17:00 og

two salinas men,  38 year-old Manuel Rivera, and 45 year-old Ricardo Torres, were convicted of assault causing great bodily harm and a hate crime for the may 2013 attack on  33 year-old Aurelio Alvarado.     Rivera and Torres entered Norma Jean’s in Castroville (which is  known for serving a lesbian, gaybisexual andtransgender clientele) and physically assaulted Alvarado while yelling derogatory slurs at him.    after the two were ejected from the club, they waited for alvarado,attacked him, and left him unconscious on the sidewalk.

witnesses and nightclub staff chased the two assailants until monterey county sheriff’s deputies made the arrests.  Together, the two face up to nearly five decades in prison.

MONTEREY CITY MANAGER SEARCH - 08/19/13 17:50 og

THE MONTEREY CITY COUNCIL WILL BEGIN THE SEARCH AGAIN FOR A NEW CITY MANAGER.  AN EARLIER RECRUITMENT ATTEMPT IN JULY WAS UNSUCCESSFUL.  THIS TIME, THE CITY COUNCIL WILL WORK WITH A RECRUITING FIRM TO FIND A REPLACEMENT FOR LONG-TIME CITY MANAGER FRED MEURER.  BECAUSE OF THE DELAY, MEURER HAS AGREED TO PUT OFF HIS RETIREMENT UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR.

WATSONVILLE HS AWARDED GRANT - 08/19/13 17:50 OG

A 5-thousand dollar Barona Education Grant,  (from the barona band of mission Indians), was awarded to the Watsonville high school wrestling department.  the department will use the grant to give students access to apple ipads for tutorial sessions, nutritional information, and learning wrestling techniques.

the barona educational grant is awarded to one school in each state legislative district.
