VOLUNTEERS ARE SOUGHT FOR A BEACH CLEAN-UP DAY IN SALINAS THIS WEEKEND.   COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY IS SPONSORED BY C.S.U.M.B’s RETURN OF THE NATIVES RESTORATION EDUCATION PROJECT WHICH IS INVOLVED IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION OF CHILDREN FROM KINDERGARTEN THROUGH UNIVERSITY.   THE CLEAN UP IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15th FROM 9 A.M. FIRE WARNINGS 9/5/12 5:40p DMF

PEOPLE FROM CARMEL VALLEY TO SANTA CRUZ STARTED WEDNESDAY WITH NATURAL PYROTECHNICS. THE REMNANTS OF A TROPICAL STORM SYSTEM MOVED NORTH AND CAUSED DRY LIGHTNING AND THUNDER OVER MUCH OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THE HEAVIEST ACTIVITY OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 5:30 A.M. AND CAL FIRE HAS SAID THEY ARE INCREASING THE NUMBER OF FIREFIGHTERS ON THE JOB AS DRY LIGHTNING HAS CAUSED MORE THAN A DOZEN FIRES IN NORTHEASTERN CALIFORNIA.

AUTHORITIES REMIND DRIVERS TO LEAVE EXTRA TIME DURING THEIR MORNING COMMUTE AFTER WRITING AN USUAL AMOUNT OF TICKETS IN SCHOOL ZONES IN SOQUEL. CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICERS WROTE 150 TICKETS IN SCHOOL ZONES IN AUGUST AS PART OF A TARGETED ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM. OFFICERS WROTE TICKETS FOR SPEEDING, RUNNING RED LIGHTS, DISTRACTED DRIVING, AND OTHER VIOLATIONS ACCORDING TO CHP OFFICER SARAH JACKSON. B.A.D.G.E.S. OR BEFORE AGGRESSIVE DRIVING GETS EVERYONE STOPPED IS A COUNTYWIDE PROGRAM THAT ROTATES LOCATIONS OF TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT. THE CHP LED AUGUST’S ENFORCEMENT WITH THE HELP OF POLICE FROM WATSONVILLE, CAPITOLA, SCOTTS VALLEY AND SANTA CRUZ.

ALISAL ST ROBBERY 9/5/12 5:00p DMF

AN ATTEMPTED ROBBERY TURNED VIOLENT EARLIER TODAY IN SALINAS.   A MAN TRIED TO ROB A 57-YEAR OLD WOMAN AS SHE GOT OUT OF HER CAR.   THE SUSPECT RAN BEHIND HER AND DEMANDED SHE HAND OVER HER PERSONAL BELONGINGS AND WHEN IT TURNED OUT SHE HAD NOTHING, THE SUSPECT KNOCKED HER DOWN AND RAN TOWARDS FELICE STREET WHERE HE ENTERED A WHITE OR SILVER HONDA AND DROVE AWAY. THE SUSPECT IS A HISPANIC MALE ABOUT 20 YEARS OLD, 5 FOOT 4 AND THIS IS THE THIRD INCIDENT TODAY WHERE THE SUSPECT DESCRIBED THE VEHICLE AS A GRAY OR SILVER HONDA.
