W’VILLE CLIMATE ACTION PLAN 09-19-2013 11:30 av

A COMMUNITY MEETING WAS HELD YESTERDAY IN THE CITY OF WATSONVILLE IN AN EFFORT TO DEVELOP A CLIMATE ACTION PLAN.   AT ISSUE IS THE CITY’S NEED TO CUT GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS TO MEET A 2020 STATE REQUIREMENT.    OFFICIALS SAY THE WEATHER IN WATSONVILLE, DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, COULD LOOK MORE LIKE THAT OF HOTTER CLIMATE AREAS WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DECADES.  A PRELIMINARY PLAN CALLS FOR LESS CAR USE, AND MORE WALKING, BICYCLING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, ALONG WITH AN INCREASE IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY.

SALINAS HANDGUN ARREST 09-19-2013 11:00 av

A CONVICTED FELON WAS ARRESTED LAST NIGHT IN SALINAS ON SUSPICION OF POSSESSING A STOLEN, LOADED HANDGUN.   40-YEAR OLD MARIO ROBLES WAS PULLED OVER JUST AFTER 9 O’CLOCK FOR VARIOUS VEHICLE CODE VIOLATIONS, WHEN AUTHORITIES SAY HE ATTEMPTED TO CONCEAL THE WEAPON INSIDE THE WAISTBAND OF HIS PANTS.    ROBLES WAS OUT ON BAIL FOR ANOTHER OFFENSE.  HE WAS ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY JAIL

SAN BENITO WELL DRILLING PROTEST 09-19-2013 10:30 av

A CENTRAL COAST GRASSROOTS GROUP IS PLANNING TO PROTEST THE DRILLING OF WELLS NEAR PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK.    THE GROUP, SAN BENITO RISING SAYS USING STEAM INJECTION TO DRILL 15 WELLS WOULD IMPACT WILDLIFE, GROUNDWATER AND THE ENVIRONMENT.    MEANWHILE, THE SAN BENITO COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, SAYS THE DRILLING WOULD NOT OCCUR ON THE PREMISES OF THE NATIONAL PARK.   THE DRILLING IS PLANNED FOR THE WELLS SOUTHWEST OF SAN BENITO NEAR BITTERWATER, AND SIX MILES SOUTH OF PINNACLES.    THE PROTEST IS SLATED FOR THIS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21ST AT 10 A.M. AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK.

ALISAL SCHOOL BOARD CREDIT CARD POLICY 09-19-2013 09:30 BP

ALISAL SCHOOL DISTRICT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE INDEX RANKS 12 OUT OF 24 IN MONTEREY COUNTY.    WITH A SCORE OF 756, IT WAS JUST BELOW THE STATE BENCHMARK OF 800 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 1000.    HOWEVER, ALISAL SCORED WELL COMPARED TO OTHER STATE SCHOOLS WITH SIMILAR ENROLLMENT AND DEMOGRAPHICS.    THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF GROWTH WAS IN THE “PROFICIENT” AND “ADVANCE” MATH CATEGORIES.   THE DISTRICT’S IMPROVEMENTS COME DESPITE HAVING HIGH PUPIL-TO-TEACHER RATIOS AND LOW SPENDING PER PUPIL.

MONTEREY COUNTY HOUSING AWARDS 09-19-2013 08:30 av

TWO SEPARATE MONTEREY COUNTY HOUSING PROJECTS HAVE BEEN GIVEN 2.5 MILLION DOLLARS IN FEDERAL FUNDING.   THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARDED THE CITY OF PACIFIC GROVE WITH $600,000 FOR HOUSING REHABILITATION.    SOLEDAD, MEANWHILE, RECEIVED $1.9-MILLION FOR IT'S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE AND HEALTH FACILITIES PROJECTS.   OVERALL $5.7 MILLION IN FEDERAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT GRANTS WERE ISSUED FOR MONTEREY, SAN BENITO, NAPA AND SOLANO COUNTIES.
