Aptos/Soquel Power Outage 01-16-14 10:00 av

A power outage is currently affecting 170 PG&E customers in the Aptos and Soquel areas.   A PG&E spokesperson says the cause of the outage is under investigation.   Power went out at 8 a.m. impacting certain areas such as State Park Drive; Old San Jose Road; Soquel Drive and Glen Haven Road.   Expected restoral time is around 12 o’clock this afternoon.

Salinas Robbery Suspects Sought 01-16-14 09:30 av

Salinas Police are searching for 3 suspects who robbed and physically assaulted a teacher last night.    Police say a teacher and a student at Salinas High School were closing up the observatory at 9:40 p.m., when they were approached by 3 hispanic males who demanded the student’s watch and cell phone, before grabbing a laptop out of the teacher’s hands.   The teacher fought back when the suspects hit and kicked him several times.    The 3 fled on foot North on Lincoln Avenue.  The student was not hurt.

Pitkins Curve Bridge Grand Opening 01-16-14 08:30 av

A ceremony commemorating the grand opening of a new Bridge and Rock Shed in Big Sur took place yesterday.  Both The Rain Rocks Rock Shed and the Pitkins Curve Bridge were built as a way of preventing road closures by keeping debris dropped by landslides and rockfalls off a certain section of Highway-1.  The 300-foot long shed is made of concrete and is a tunnel like structure that stands next to the new quarter-mile-long bridge, which extends from Limekiln Creek Bridge to South of Lucia.   The project broke ground in November of 2009.

Castroville Fraud Conviction 01-16-14 8:00 av

A 26-year old Monterey County woman was convicted yesterday on fraud charges.   Castroville resident Samantha King worked as a caretaker for a Pacific Grove handicapped girl for about 5 months in 2011, when the girl’s parents found unauthorized transactions on their credit card statements.  King reportedly went on the parent’s computer and made online purchases using their credit card number.  She faces 6 months of jail time or a $1,000 fine.

SC Wireless Facility Public Hearing 01-16-14 07:30 av

Santa Cruz County will hold a public hearing tomorrow on a proposal to build a new wireless communications facility in Ben Lomond.   The proposal discusses locating antennas for the roof mounted Verizon facility within an extension to an existing tower at the Ben Lomond Fire station.   The proposal also includes placing outdoor radio equipment and utility cabinets on the adjacent parcel at Scarborough Ace Hardware.   The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Board of Supervisors Chamber located at the Santa Cruz County Government Center on 701 Ocean Street.
