controlled burn 05/25/11 7:45a.m. TDH

as part of a training exercise for firefighters scheduled to be held today, a controlled burn is set to be conducted in monterey county.   monterey county regional fire district officials are planning to conduct the burn, at laguna seca recreation area rifle and pistol range, from 8:30 a.m. to     7 p.m. (if the weather allows).  several agencies will participate in the exercise, with the goal of testing their coordination during emergencies.

scc rodeo ok’d 05/25/11 7a.m. TDH

 members of the santa cruz county fair board voted yesterday to approve a request to hold a rodeo at the fair grounds this october.   the 6 to 2 vote came almost a year after the board initially approved the request.  it reversed course later, under threat of a lawsuit.   opponents of the rodeo cited humane and environmental reasons, but a private consultant told the board that the rodeo was exempt from the environmental regulations being cited.   the event is being organized by the stars of justice, (which is a youth program run by the santa cruz county sheriff’s office).  proceeds from the event will go towards helping local youth programs.

No In-N-Out in Seaside 05/25/11 6a.m. TDH

Seaside city council members rejected a request last night by In-N-Out Burger, for an extension in planning for a restaurant on del monte avenue.   That means that in-n-out will not be coming to seaside, (at least not at that location).  Council members said their biggest concern was traffic at the location, and some were frustrated at the burger chain’s request for the extension.   Council members could consider putting a hotel on the proposed site instead.

FEMA Funds Available (Tsunami) 05/24/11 5:30p.m. TDH

Officials at the California emergency management agency have signed an agreement with federal officials, to start the flow of disaster relief funds to counties affected by the tsunami surge in march.    The march 11th surge cause millions of dollars worth of damage to santa cruz and other counties.   The public assistance funds from FEMA are now eligible to be obtained by local officials.

Pryce Street Fire 05/24/11 4:45p.m. TDH

Nobody was injured when a fire broke out last night (mon) in a santa cruz home.  Although several people were in the basement of the house on pryce street, all were able to make it out safely.   Santa cruz firefighters responded to the 9 p.m. blaze, and extinguished the flames before they spread to a nearby gas station.   Damage is estimated at 100-thousand dollars; the cause is being investigated.
