State Senate debate 7/26/10 TDH

A debate is scheduled to be held tonight in San Luis Obisbo, between the candidates vying to fill the seat of the 15th state senate district, which spans from Santa Cruz to Santa Barbara.  However, the leading vote-getter in the first special election will not be in attendance.  Republican Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee will be in Sacramento, working on budget issues with fellow Republican lawmakers.   That will leave the remaining candidates, John Laird, Mark Hinkle, and Jim Fitzgerald to debate the issues tonight.   Blakeslee has agreed to attend 3-future debates, scheduled for august 5th, 6th, and 12th.   The run-off election is scheduled for august 17th.

SALINAS DROWNING 07-26-10 14:45 a.v.

Police in Salinas are investigating a drowning that occurred yesterday afternoon near Miller’s Camp. The drowning victim, 24-year old Adriano Rodriquez was at the Arroyo Seco River with family when he was discovered around 2 p.m. Police say Rodriquez had already drowned by the time his family was able to get help. The death is currently being ruled as accidental. An autopsy is slated for tomorrow.

According to organizers with the Gilroy Garlic Festival, attendance was down this year during the 32nd annual festival, however revenue totals were up this year compared to last year. 97,966 people came out for this year’s festival compared to the 107,000 that turned out last year. Organizers say that despite the lower attendance, revenue increased this year by 7%, and more than 150 local non-profits brought in over $500,000 during this year’s festival.

A permanent injunction was filed last week against a Monterey medical marijuana dispensary. The city is asking that employees of My Caregiver Cooperative Inc. be prohibited from using OR going on the property since they are violating the city’s zoning ordinance and medical marijuana moratorium. The injunction claims that the Lighthouse Avenue Cooperative, which stopped operating after a preliminary injunction was issued on March 12th, did not indicate that they would be operating as a medical marijuana dispensary when they applied for a business license. A court date concerning the permanent injunction was filed for October 8th.

A Gilroy police officer has been recognized for his acts of heroism after saving the life of a 2 month old baby on July 9th. Officer Geoff  Guerin was acknowledged by the Gilroy Fire Department for providing excellent public safety services in partnership with the community after coming to the rescue of a woman on Forest Street, who said that her 2-month old granddaughter had stopped breathing. Officer Guerin applied procedures to clear the child’s airway, until she began to breathe on her own, and then waited for additional assistance to arrive. The baby was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and observation.
