Leatherback turtle found dead 07/29/12 11:45p.m. TDH

A 700-pound leatherback sea turtle was found dead Friday in waters off of monterey.   the turtle was transported to a santa cruz research facility to be examined.  The California coast is designated as “critical habitat” for leatherback turtles, which are the largest sea turtles in the world.  A healthy leatherback can live for 50 years.

2-separate ocean rescues (mco) 07/29/12 11:45p.m. TDH

Coast guard crews responded to 2-separate rescue calls near monterey over the weekend.  the first incident occurred at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, when coastguardsmen were called to a capsized dinghy off of del monte beach.  2-adults and a child were brought to shore safe.  In the 2nd incident, on Sunday, coastguardsmen were called to a boat on fire.   the small boat (with 1-person on board) was off of del monte beach (in the surf zone).  The boat was towed to safety and the fire was extinguished.  No injuries were reported.  [in either incident].

Sc County clerk offers wv appts 7/29/12 11:45p.m. TDH

 

The santa cruz county clerk has announced plans to hold office hours in Watsonville, once a month (until the end of the year).    The county clerk will be dong business from the Watsonville city clerk’s office on main street.  hours will be by appointment, 1 Wednesday every month.  The first session is set for august 15th.  To schedule an appointment, call 831-454-2060.

Pajaro river dredging mon—oct. 07/29/12 TDH

 

A long-awaited project to remove thousands of cubic yards of sediment from the pajaro river is set to begin today.  the first phase of the project is scheduled to last through October.   Traffic could be impacted on watsonville’s walker street and union street, as trucks haul the sediment away.

Public meeting: registration tax (scc) 07/29/12 11:45p.m. TDH

 

A public hearing is set for Wednesday morning to discuss a proposed 10-dollar vehicle registration tax in santa cruz county.  members of the [santa cruz] county regional transportation commission will take comments from the public at the 9:30 a.m. meeting, which will be held at the santa cruz county board of supervisors’ chamber at 701 ocean street. Commissioners are hoping to put the measure on the November ballot. it would raise an estimated 2-million dollars (or more), annually.   those funds would be dedicated to county road improvements.
