guilty: attempted murder 09/10/12 7a.m. TDH

A salinas man who was previously convicted of murder, pleaded guilty Friday to 3-counts of attempted murder for the same incident.  28-year-old jose avelino Sandoval was found guilty of the 2nd degree murder of angel Escobedo.   Escobedo was gunned down in 2009  on a watsonville basketball court.    His brother and 2 friends were able to escape being shot, despite attempts to gun them down as well.  Sandoval is expected to be sentenced October 19th for all 4 crimes.   The convictions are being appealed by the defense.

mco cal-fire to help fight ukiah fire 09/10/12 7:15p.m. TDH

Cal-fire firefighters based in monterey county have been called to help fight a 41-hundred acre fire burning east of ukiah.  The “scotts fire” started Friday, on cow mountain in lake county. it was about 15-percent contained as of last night. strike teams from monterey, seaside, north monterey county, and presidio of monterey fire departments.

Of Otters and urchins 09/10/12 7a.m. TDH

A new study by researchers at uc santa cruz has revealed how sea otters can help reduce climate change.   Sea otters feed on sea urchins, and when the population of otters is healthy, the otters can reduce the impact of urchins on kelp.  According to the paper released in the publication frontiers in ecology and the environment, when kelp forests are allowed to prosper, the kelp can absorb 12-times the amount of carbon dioxide (than if they were stunted by urchins).

Cessna crashes off Big Sur, 2 rescued 09/09/12 10:10p.m. TDH

a small plane went down off the coast of big sue sunday afternoon.   the 2-people on board were safely rescued following the 3 p.m. crash.   2-coast guard helicopters responded to the wreck, along with coast guard rescue boats.   the 2-people were hoisted into 1 of the M-H-65 helicopters.  both declined medical treatment.   the plane sank into the pacific ocean.     the cause of the wreck is under investigation.   coast guard crews credited a NOAA-registered G-P-S device for the quick rescue.

SC grad, NFL player, asked not to publicly support gay marriage 09/09/12 10p.m. TDH

A santa cruz high school graduate who now plays for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens is drawing attention for his outspoken support of same-sex marriage.  Brendon Ayanbadejo has been publicly supporting marriage equality since 2008, but now a maryland lawmaker is asking him to [quote] "concentrate on football."   maryland house of delegates member emmett c. burns junior, (a democrat), sent a letter to the ravens' owner requesting that management [quote] "inhibit such expressions."  ravens management did just the opposite, issuing a letter in support of the linebacker's right to speak his mind.    Maryland voters will decide this november on whether or not to legalize gay marriage in the state.   The letter was sent following ayanbadejo's donation of a pair of Ravens tickets to a fundraiser for a group supporting the ballot initiative.
