Two people in two different residence’s suffered injuries from the same bullet after a gunshot was fired into a Hollister home last night. A 24-year old man was standing inside his Third Street apartment near a window at 6 p.m., when a man outside fired a shot at him. Police say the bullet went through the man’s left arm, continued on through a wall to an apartment next door, striking a 12-year old girl in the back. Both of the victims were hospitalized for their injuries. No suspects were arrested. Police found a rifle in the backyard of one of the residences, along with a handgun in a hedge next to a nearby home.
A two-year old suffered injuries after a molotov cocktail was thrown at a Salinas home last night. Police responded at 9:05 p.m. to a report of bottles being thrown at a home on the 900-block of Acosta Plaza, along with shots fired at the same residence. several bullet casings were found outside the front door. police also determined the bottles were molotov cocktails. No serious injuries were reported, however the child was struck in the eye by debris and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Record-low rainfall and no significant rain in the forecast has prompted extended resources and staffing for the Cal Fire Santa Cruz-San Mateo unit. As a result, Cal Fire will continue to staff aircraft, heavy equipment, fire engines and seasonal firefighters to carry on firefighting well past the season. Also, because of dangerous fire conditions, the burn ban that was put into place on April 29th, still remains in effect. No open burning, other than approved campfires, is allowed without special permits.
A 59-year man suffered critical injuries yesterday after crashing with a pick-up truck in Aptos. The just before 9 a.m. collision occurred when the man was riding a road-bike south of Cathedral Drive north of Burns Avenue. Officials say the cyclist collided with the front of a 1998 Toyota Tacoma driven by a 40-year old Santa Cruz man after police say the man was driving too slow. The cyclist, who wore a helmet, was ejected from his bicycle. Investigations continue into what prompted the crash.
Two armed robbers are being sought after a Salinas store was held-up last night. Police say two men wearing hoodies entered the Smart and Final on the 300-block of East Market Street just before midnight, when one of them forced an employee at gunpoint to hand-over an undisclosed amount of cash. No arrests were made after the suspects fled in an unknown direction.
