apple hill murder trial 08/05/11 0900 E.A.

jury members in the murder trial of 2 salinas men heard testimony from an expert witness about false memories on thursday.  the defense team of  called deborah davis, professor at the university of nevada, reno to testify about her expertise in invented memories and questionable interrogation techniques.  26 year-old julian escobar and 27 year-old jose avelino sandoval are accused of killing 19 year-old angel escobedo at a basketball court in the apple hill neighborhood of watsonville in march of 2009.  closing arguments are expected to begin on monday.

school readiness coordinator retiring 08/05/11 0900 E.A.

the school readiness coordinator for first 5 san benito has made plans to retire this month.  joyce sweet has been working with first 5 since 2001.  since then, she has been involved with programs that help parents read aloud to their children, a summer camp for INCOMING kindergarten students, and school garden project.  sweet says the part of the job she will miss the most is the kids

a bay area horse rescue program is moving to hollister.  after losing a lease agreement, the equine rescue center is preparing to move their operation, which includes 26 horses and 3 donkeys, to a new property in hollister.  founder monica gavin says that hollister’s temperate weather is better for the horses than in their former home in pescadero. 

gavilan theft 08/05/11 0900 E.A.

gilroy police are seeking information on the theft of over a thousand dollars from the gavilan college football team.  the cash was taken from a total of 10-thousand dollars the team raised at their margarita booth at the gilroy garlic festival.  police say that someone grabbed a handfull of money from the cash box while the coach was preparing to transport the money to the school’s office.  anyone with any information is asked to contact the gilroy police department.

a los gatos woman accused of having sex with her son’s teenage friend has been found not guilty of 2 felony counts, but was found guilty of 1 misdemeanor county of molesting a child.  48 year-old sara cole had engaged in a sexual relationship with a 16 year-old friend of her son’s over several months.  cole is set to be sentenced later this month
