SALINAS NOT GUILTY PLEA 04-13-11 09:40 a.v.

3 Salinas alleged Norteno gang members entered a not guilty plea yesterday after facing multiple charges including carjacking and kidnapping. 19-year old Jesus Flores, 17-year old Oscar Sanchez and 16-year old Josue Zatarain face possible life sentences if convicted for kidnapping a 31-year old man at gunpoint outside an Alisal Street strip mall Friday. The 3 were arrested after a brief car chase ended in a farm field off Highway 156 near Prunedale. A preliminary hearing is slated for April 22nd.

Monterey County Board of Supervisors rejected a developer’s plan yesterday to build a shopping center in a rural area of Monterey County. The Corral de Tierra project was scaled back from it’s original design of over 126,000 square-feet to 112,000, and is slated to be built at the intersection of Highway 68 and Corral de Tierra Road. Supervisors argue the rescaled version of the project is still too large and site concerns related to water, traffic and the effects the shopping center would have on the area’s natural beauty.

A rock slide, that dumped tons of rock last month blocking dozens of homes on a Scotts Valley Road, is expected to take months before the debris is cleared. Geologists say they need more time to study the slide that occurred on Nelson Road on March 21st, and expect to finish a report on it by early June. Public Works officials, meanwhile, said it would take over 2,000 truckloads to haul debris from the road.

S.C. TRACTOR RESCUE 04-13-11 06:30 a.v.

A 65-year old man was rescued yesterday morning after he was found pinned under a tractor. Emergency crews in Santa Cruz County responded to a 911 call after a landscape contractor was backing up a small tractor just before 11 a.m. on the 200 block of Golf Club Drive, when it struck a hole in the ground and the driver became trapped under one of the tractor wheels. The man was extracted from the tractor before he was air-lifted to an out of county hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

HWY 129 FATAL CRASH - UPDATED 04-13-11 06:00 a.v.

A fatal accident yesterday in North Monterey County caused both lanes of Highway-129, between Rogge Lane and Chittenden Road, to shut down for several hours. The 3:30 p.m. crash occurred near the town of Aromas, when a Watsonville man, who was driving a loaded cement mixer with a trailer West near Rogge Lane, veered across the eastbound lane, causing the truck to roll over and hit a tree. The driver was declared dead at the scene. The road was reopened after 10 p.m.
