caltrain electrification 04/09/12 0700 e.a.

the california high speed rail authority and caltrain have come to an agreement to electrify caltrain from san francisco to san jose, but not the route from san jose to gilroy.  gilroy and morgan hill were left out of the electrification project because an agreement has been reached between caltrain and union pacific, who owns the railways south of san jose.  the electrification of the rails is expected to be completed within a decade.   

meth arrests 04/09/12 0700 e.a.

two gilroy brothers were arrested recently on suspicion of meth sales and firearm possession.  state police served a search warrant at the home of 21 year old andrew charles and 23 year old richard charles on march 28th.  officers found a loaded handgun and an ounce of crystal methamphetamine at the forest street residence.  the brothers were arrested and booked into santa clara county jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance for sale and possession of a firearm.  the investigation was conducted by the united narcotic enforcement task force.   

ucsc origami 04/09/12 0700 e.a.

a new exhibit has opened at u.c. santa cruz, that looks at the relationship between the japanese art of origami, and mathematics.  “origami: art and mathematics”, honors david huffman, a professor of information science at the university and a pioneer of computational origami, a discipline that uses mathematics and computer design to enhance origami pieces.  the free exhibit is open to the public at the eloise pickard smith library on the ucsc campus until june 16th.   

2 gilroy robberies 04/08/12 11:30p.m. TDH

Police in Gilroy are trying to determine if 2 Saturday night robberies were connected.   The 1st robbery was reported at 10:26 p.m., when 2-suspects assaulted and robbed a taxi driver near murray and I.O.O.F. avenues.   the victim suffered minor injuries.  just minutes later, at 10:32 p.m., a man walking on I.O.O.F. avenue was robbed at knifepoint.   The victim surrendered personal items, however he was not injured.   No suspects were immediately located.



Thomas Kinkade dead, 54 04/08/12 11:30p.m. TDH

Well-known artist thomas kinkade died on Friday.   Kinkade was known for painting popular scenes of cottages and other bright landscapes.   Known as “the painter of light,” kinkade lived in los gatos.   He died at home, at the age of 54.   the cause of death is yet to be released, although a family statement indicated that it was of natural causes.
