MARINE STUDY U-C-S-C-11/17/13-10:48-PMD

A U-C-S-C STUDY THAT STUDIED TOP OCEAN PREDATORS SUCH AS ELEPHANT SEALS, HUMPBACK, AND BLUE WHALES HAS FOUND HUMAN ACTIVITIES HAVE A LARGE IMPACT IN MARINE SANCTUARIES. THE STUDY FOUND THAT EVEN IN SANCTUARIES, LIKE THE MONTEREY BAY, POPULATIONS OF MARINE HUNTERS ARE GREATLY AFFECTED BY ACTIVITIES NOT ADDRESSED WHEN AREAS WERE DESIGNATED AS SANCTUARIES. THE SANCTUARIES WERE ORIGINALLY PUT IN PLACE TO PROTECT SEA LIFE FROM HARMFUL SIDE-EFFECTS OF OIL PRODUCTION, AND DID NOT TAKE INTO THE EFFECTS OF FISHING AND SHIPPING, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON MARINE POPULATIONS.
