State Drought Spending Plan 02-19-14 18:30 av

A 680-million dollar emergency Drought spending plan was announced today by California Governor Jerry Brown and legislative leaders.     The governor announced the call to action saying the state is doing it’s part by providing immediate funding for drinking water, food, housing and assistance for water conserving technologies.  The proposal does not focus on long-term water supply improvements, but instead provides money for immediate aid.  Meanwhile federal drought assistance legislation has also been introduced for California putting 300-million dollars towards emergency aid, drought-relief projects and water conservation.

Salinas Woman Dies in Pedestrian Collision 02-19-14 18:30 av

A 25-year old Salinas woman has died from injuries she suffered nearly a month ago when she was hit by a vehicle.    Police say Christina Pimental died in the hospital from head injuries four days after the February 4th accident while attempting to cross East Laurel Drive.  Police say the woman appeared to step directly in front of the car, which was traveling eastbound on East Laurel Drive.   The case remains under investigation.   No criminal charges have been filed.

TRIAL DATE HECKER PASS RD HOMICIDE 02-19-14 1100 SG

A TRIAL DATE HAS BEEN SET FOR FIVE DEFENDANTS IN THE KILLING OF A 14 YEAR-OLD FROM WATSONVILLE.  ALEX RODRIGUEZ, DAVID SANCHEZ, AND NANCY TAPIA, ALL IN THEIR EARLY TWENTIES, WILL APPEAR IN COURT JUNE 9th.    THE THREE FACE MURDER CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH THE SHOOTING DEATH OF JESSE LOPEZ ON HECKER PASS ROAD IN DECEMBER OF 2011.   22 YEAR-OLD CARLOS VALENCIA AND 20 YEAR-OLD URIEL ORTIZ HAVE ALSO BEEN CHARGED IN THE CASE WITH FELONY ACCESSORY AND FELONY GANG PARTICIPATION.

W’Ville Stabbing Arrest 02-19-14 10:30 av

A man is under arrest on suspicion of stabbing a 51-year old man at a Watsonville apartment complex Monday.  Police say 49-year old Terry Lee Span and the victim got into an argument followed by a physical altercation at the Wall Street Inn on West Beach Street. The victim was found later in the day lying in a stairwell of the suspect’s apartment building also on West Beach Street with a stab wound to the arm.  He was hospitalized and later released.    Police say Spann was found 2 hours later hiding under a blanket in a carport on West Fifth Street.  He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

San Benito Water Resolution 02-19-14 09:30 av

A resolution declaring a water shortage emergency was unanimously approved by The San Benito County Water District yesterday.   The declaration, which goes into effect immediately, asks large water users to voluntarily cut-back on water usage by 15-percent.   those who use more water than they’re allocated will also be fined an additional 12-hundred dollars in overuse fees.    The water emergency resolution applies mostly to farmers, ranchers, golf courses and industrial parks.
