STATEWIDE WHOOPING COUGH WARNING 07-19-10 13:30 a.v.

A new recommendation was released this week by state health officials regarding vaccinations against whooping cough. The California Department of Public Health warns that the epidemic continues to grow, and as of last week, the current rate of increase is 5 times higher now over the same period last year. So far, 5 Californians have died of whooping cough this year. State officials say those targeted for vaccinations are mostly seniors and women in child-bearing years.

WATSONVILLE DRUG ARREST 07-19-10 12:45 a.v.

A 35-year old Watsonville man was taken into custody on drug charges Friday night. Officers served a search warrant for the home of Manuel Alfaro and arrested him after 26-grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, along with fake social security cards and $3,500 in cash, were seized from his home. Alfaro was arrested for drug possession charges as well as an outstanding warrant related to unlawful sex with a minor.

SALINAS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ARREST 07-19-10 12:15 a.v.

A Salinas man was tased after officers responded to a domestic violence dispute over the weekend. Officers arrived at the Kilbreth Avenue home on Sunday evening, to find 31-year old Luis Estrada on top of his wife, after he was reported to have put a pair of scissors to her neck and threatened to kill her, and then himself. Officers say Estrada, who became violent when the victim told him she wanted a divorce, was tased after failing to comply with orders to put his hands up. Estrada was booked into Monterey County Jail for domestic violence charges.

HERB SUPPLEMENT RECALL 07-19-10 11:55 a.v.

A nationwide recall has been issued for a Herb Supplement. The voluntary recall is a result of the Food and Drug Administration lab analysis of “Slim-30-Herb Supplement”. The supplement was found to have un-declared traces of N-Des-methyl Sibu-tramine. (Sibutramine is an F-D-A approved drug used as an appetitive suppressant for weight loss). The product has NOT been approved by the F-D-A, causing the product’s safety and effectiveness to remain unknown. No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with this product. Slim-30 Herb Supplement is sold as a Natural Herb for Weight Loss. The affected lot/code being recalled is 0-3-2-0-0-9. The product was sold to distributors and retails stores nationwide and via internet sales.

MOBILE HOME DESTROYED - 07/19/10 18:03 S.S.

A  GONZALES  MOBILE  HOME  WAS  DESTROYED  BY  FIRE  OVER  THE  WEEKEND.     1   MAN  SUFFERED  2ND AND  3RD DEGREE  BURNS  TRYING  TO  PUT  OUT  THE  BLAZE  WITH  A  GARDEN  HOSE.     THE  CAUSE  OF  THE   FIRE,   OFF  GLORIA  ROAD IN  GONZALES,    IS  STILL  UNDER  INVESTIGATION.
