M’TRY BOMB SCARE BANK ROBBER ID 09-27-2013 12:30 av

A SUSPECTED BANK ROBBER ARRESTED FOLLOWING 2 BOMB SCARES YESTERDAY IN DOWNTOWN MONTEREY, HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A SENIOR CITIZEN.   POLICE SAY GREENFIELD RESIDENT 78-YEAR OLD SERGIO VALDERRAMA HELD UP AN EAST FRANKLIN STREET BANK AT GUNPOINT BEFORE FLEEING WITH AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF CASH.   HE WAS ARRESTED AND THEN TOLD OFFICERS HE PLANTED A HOMEMADE BOMB OUTSIDE A MUNRAS AVENUE BANK AND ANOTHER AT WASHINGTON AND PEARL STREET.   THE BOMB SQUAD LOCATED AND DETONATED BOTH DEVICES.  AUTHORITIES CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE THE INCIDENT, WHICH CAUSED A 7-BLOCK RADIUS TO SHUT DOWN FOR OVER FOUR HOURS.

NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY 09-27-2013 11:30 av

IN HONOR OF NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY, A MONTEREY COUNTY ESTUARINE RESERVE WILL HOLD A SPECIAL EVENT TOMORROW.   THE ELKHORN SLOUGH NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE WILL CELEBRATE THE 25TH ANNUAL EVENT FROM 10 A.M. TO NOON BY MARKING IT WITH A NATIVE PLANT NURSERY PROJECT.    VOLUNTEERS ARE WELCOME AND ASKED TO MEET AT THE RESERVE’S VISITOR CENTER.     ACCORDING TO THE ELKHORN SLOUGH FOUNDATION, THE DAY IS HONORED AT DOZENS OF SITES THROUGHOUT THE COASTAL U.S.

SALINAS LAUNDROMAT ROBBER JAILED 09-27-2013 11:00 av

A WOMAN WHO WAS HOSPITALIZED AFTER BEING SHOT BY A SALINAS POLICE OFFICER LAST WEEK FOLLOWING AN ATTEMPTED ARMED ROBBERY, IS NOW IN JAIL.   44-YEAR OLD CHARLENE HALE REPORTEDLY TRIED ROBBING SEVERAL PEOPLE AT THE “CITY SUDS LAUNDROMAT” ON PAJARO, WHEN SHE FAILED TO COMPLY WITH RESPONDING OFFICERS AND REACHED FOR A KNIFE HIDDEN IN THE WAISTBAND OF HER PANTS. HALE WAS SHOT BY AN OFFICER AND WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH MINOR INJURIES.   SHE WAS BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY JAIL ON ROBBERY AND WEAPON CHARGES.

SALINAS 6-Y/O HIT AND RUN 09-27-2013 09:30 av

A 6-YEAR OLD GIRL WAS AIR-LIFTED TO A BAY AREA TRAUMA CENTER AFTER BEING STRUCK BY A FELONY HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER LAST NIGHT IN SALINAS.   AUTHORITIES SAY A 34-YEAR OLD MOTHER AND HER TWO DAUGHTERS WERE CROSSING EAST MARKET STREET AT CENTER JUST AFTER 6:30, WHEN A WOMAN DRIVING A WHITE HONDA HIT THE LITTLE GIRL.   THE GIRL REPORTEDLY BOUNCED OFF OF THE CAR’S HOOD AS THE VEHICLE CONTINUED WESTBOUND ON EAST MARKET.  WITNESSES SAY THE DRIVER NEVER SLOWED DOWN.

TRI-COUNTY RED FLAG WARNING 09-27-2013 09:00 av

A RED FLAG WARNING IS IN EFFECT TODAY FOR THE TRI-COUNTY AREA DUE TO EXTREME FIRE CONDITIONS.   THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUED THE ALERT FOR PARTS OF THE SANTA CRUZ, SANTA LUCIA AND SAN BENITO MOUNTAINS, ALONG WITH THE LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST AND THE INTERIOR OF MONTEREY COUNTY, WHICH INCLUDES PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK.  THE WARNING IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 3 O’CLOCK TODAY.   HUNTERS, CAMPERS AND OTHERS VISITING THE OUTDOORS, AS WELL AS PRESCRIBED BURNERS, SHOULD EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION TODAY.  CAL-FIRE SAYS A COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS, LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND WARM TEMPERATURES CAN CONTRIBUTE TO EXTREME FIRE BEHAVIOR.
