FIREFIGHTERS IN SALINAS RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF A SOUTH MAIN STREET RESTAURANT ON FIRE TODAY.    AUTHORITIES SAY THE BLAZE BROKE OUT AT REDS BURGER JOINT AROUND 10:30 THIS MORNING.   BY 10:53 OFFICIALS SAY THE FIRE WAS UNDER CONTROL.   THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE IS NOT YET DETERMINED, HOWEVER DISPATCHERS REPORTED THE BLAZE STARTED IN AN OVEN.   NO CUSTOMERS WERE PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT.   NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

SENTENCING FOR SALINAS CHILD MOLESTER 09-12-2013 11:00 av

A SALINAS MAN ACCUSED OF MOLESTING HIS STEPDAUGHTER FOUR YEARS AGO, COULD SPEND A HUNDRED YEARS IN PRISON AFTER HIS SENTENCING TODAY.   35-YEAR OLD JOSE LUNA JR. HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH FELONY CHARGES OF UNLAWFUL INTERCOURSE WITH A MINOR.   THE VICTIM SAID THE RELATIONSHIP STARTED WHEN SHE WAS 14-YEARS OF AGE.    OFFICERS MEANWHILE HAVE CONFIRMED SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF SEXUAL ABUSE TOOK PLACE DURING THAT TIME PERIOD.

CASTROVILLE TRAILER TOTALED BY FIRE 09.12.13 0743 JJG

A CASTROVILLE TRAILER CAUGHT FIRE ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON.     UPON ARRIVAL FIREFIGHTERS ENCOUNTERED EXPLOSIONS, SUSPECTED TO BE FROM AMMUNITION AND PROPANE STORED IN THE TRAILER.     OFFICIALS ESTIMATE DAMAGES UPWARD OF 75,000 DOLLARS.     OFFICIALS ARE INVESTIGATING WHETHER THE RESIDENT HAD THE PROPER PERMIT TO LIVE IN THE CONVERTED TRAILER.

JUROR SELECTION NARROWS IN RUELAS MURDER TRIAL 09.12.13 0800 JJG

THE NUMBER OF POTENTIAL JURORS HAS BEEN NARROWED DOWN IN A 16-YEAR OLD MONTEREY COUNTY MURDER TRIAL.    HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WERE WHITTLED DOWN THIS WEEK TO 100 IN AN EFFORT TO FINALIZE 12 JURORS WITH TWO ALTERNATES FOR THE TRIAL OF 34-YEAR OLD JACOBO RUELAS.   RUELAS WAS CHARGED WITH THE 1997 MURDER OF MONTEREY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, KRISTOPHER OLINGER.    HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, 24-YEAR OLD ANGEL RUELAS HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES MURDER, KIDNAPPING, AND CARJACKING WITH GANG AND WEAPON CHARGES.   THE TRIAL FOR JACOBO RUELAS IS SET TO CONTINUE NEXT WEEK.

MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM AZA AWARDS 09-12-2013 10:30 av

TWO NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO THE MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM FOR IT’S WORK WITH SEA OTTERS AND TEEN EDUCATION.  THE AQUARIUM RECEIVED THE AWARD FROM THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ZOOS AND AQUARIUMS FOR ESTABLISHING IT’S SEA OTTER AND CONSERVATION PROGRAM.  THE PROGRAM RESCUES AND CARES FOR STRANDED, ILL OR INJURED SOUTHERN SEA OTTERS THEN RELEASES THEM BACK TO THE WILD.   THE AQUARIUM’S WATSONVILLE AREA TEEN’S CONSERVING HABITATS PROGRAM WAS ALSO HONORED.  THE YEAR-LONG PROGRAM PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO EXPLORE LOCAL ECOSYSTEMS.
