SOQUEL ENCAMPMENT 01/19/14 1330 GE

VOLUNTEERS FROM TAKE BACK SANTA CRUZ , SOQUEL NEIGHBORS ALLIANCE AND SEVERAL OTHER GROUPS, GOT TOGETHER TO CLEAN UP A HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT IN A LOCAL PARK. SIX HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS HAD RECENTLY APPEARED IN ANNA JEAN CUMMINGS PARK, LOCATED IN THE HILLS ABOVE SOQUEL. THE CAMPERS WERE GIVEN 10 DAYS BY THE SANTA CRUZ SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT TO VACATE THE AREA BEFORE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY PARKS DEPARTMENT DID AN INITIAL CLEANUP. THE VOLUNTEERS THEN CAME IN SATURDAY MORNING TO REMOVE THE DEBRIS LEFT BEHIND AND RESTORE THE AREA TO ITS RUSTIC CONDITION.

MALDONADO 01/17/14 1255 GE

A FREEDOM MAN, CHARGED WITH MURDER IN THE NOVEMBER STABBING OF HIS BROTHER, WILL BE HELD TO ANSWER ON A MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE INSTEAD. AFTER 3 DAYS OF TESTIMONY, SANTA CRUZ SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE STEPHEN SIEGEL RULED ON FRIDAY THAT THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE FOR A MURDER CHARGE. 20 YEAR OLD AUTREYDREZ MALDONADO IS EXPECTED BACK IN COURT ON JANUARY 31ST TO HAVE A TRIAL DATE SET. HE IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD CUSTODY IN LIEU OF 7 HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS BAIL.

Big sur fatality-1/19/14-1238-PMD

THE BIXBY BRIDGE IN BIG SUR WAS THE SITE OF A FATAL ACCIDENT B MORNING.   THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL HAD BOTH LANES OF HIGHWAY 1 CLOSED AFTER A VEHICLE WENT OFF THE BRIDGE AND FELL INTO THE WATERS BELOW.  AFTER THE INITIAL INVESTIGATION CONFIRMED 1 FATALITY, 1 LANE OF THE BRIDGE WAS RE-OPENED TO TRAFFIC, WHILE THE OTHER LANE REMAINED CLOSED FOR VEHICLE RECOVERY. THE NAME OF THE DECEASED AND THE CAUSE OF THE ACCIDENT HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED AT THIS TIME.

SC CONDO FIRE-1/19/14-1138-PMD

A FIRE SATURDAY AFTERNOON LEFT 5 PEOPLE  HOMELESS IN SANTA CRUZ. SHORTLY AFTER 3 P-M THE SANTA CRUZ AND U-C-S-C FIRE DEPARTMENTS RESPONDED TO REPORTS OF A STRUCTURE FIRE ON THE 300 BLOCK OF HIGH STREET. ON SCENE FIREFIGHTERS FOUGHT A BLAZE IN A 1ST FLOOR UNIT OF A 2 STORY 4 UNIT CONDO. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED BEFORE IT COULD SPREAD TO OTHER UNITS, HOWEVER ALL 5 OCCUPANTS WERE DISPLACED. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE IS BEING DESCRIBED AS ACCIDENTAL AND ELECTRICAL IN NATURE.

WATSNVLL METH GUN BUST-1/17/14-1701-PMD

A WATSONVILLE AREA COUPLE WAS ARRESTED WEDNESDAY NIGHT.   POLICE RESPONDING TO A 11:50 P-M  REPORT OF A MAN WITH A GUN AT A GAS STATION ON 21-HUNDRED BLOCK OF FREEDOM BOULEVARD HELD 25 YEAR OLD JOSE LOPEZ AND 24 YEAR OLD DAISY LEONOR AT GUNPOINT WHILE THEY SEARCHED THEIR CAR, FINDING A RIFLE IN THE BACK SEAT.  LOPEZ WAS ARRESTED ON WEAPONS CHARGES AND POSSESSION OF METH. LEONOR WAS ARRESTED ON PROBATION VIOLATION AND POSSESSION OF A CAR BURGLARY TOOL.
