With an estimated 20 fires breaking out in Santa Cruz since Monday… approximately 7000 customers… most in boulder creek are still without power.
According to a p-g and e spokesman as of 6:30 this morning 3,000 in Boulder Creek are in the dark, 913 in Felton, 335 in Scotts Valley and 903 in Santa Cruz. Almost all will be restored by this afternoon or this evening. About 1,000 folks in boulder creek tho won’t have restoration until tomorrow morning.
For firefighters, today’s rain is a welcome relief and is expected to last through out the weekend.

It’s a grim anniversary but one worth noting. On the anniversary of the first reported Covid 19 case in the U.S. …. Santa Cruz marked its highest number of deaths from the virus on a single day.
Seven new deaths from Covid 19 were recently reported in Santa Cruz county… the total number now stands at 120 deaths. The latest death was a Latino man in his 60’s.. Who was not living in a care facility.
Meanwhile the news is getting better, as county spokesman Jason Hoppin says the virus is reaching a plateau and i-c-u usage is down.

In business news… the first test of Facebook’s oversight board comes with a decision to continue to suspend Donald Trump’s Facebook account. Trump was banned from using Facebook after the violent disruption at the U.S.. Capitol January 6th.
Facebook decided to defer the indefinite suspension of trump’s account to the panel… for what the social media giant said will be “independent judgment.” The independent panel was created to decide controversial issues like; what constitutes hate speech.
By contrast, Twitter permanently banned trump from its platform.

Future marine biologists and scientists at UCSC will benefit from a federal grant from the National Science Foundation to study marine mammals.
The 152-thousand 929 dollar grant will be used to evaluate marine mammal data such as habitat usage, migratory routes and impacts of human activities near predators. Research will also focus on how to respond to climate change with the new data.
The grant was announced by congressman Jimmy Panetta earlier this week.
