101 FIRES-1-7/20/14-1455-PMD

 

A SERIES OF FIRES BROKE OUT IN THE PRUNEDALE AREA OF HIGHWAY 101 ON SATURDAY.  AT AROUND 7 P-M FIRE CREWS RESPONDED TO 3 SEPARATE FIRES IN THE CRAZY HORSE CANYON AREA. 8 FIRE ENGINES AND AT LEAST 1 AIR TANKER WERE USED TO CONTAIN THE FIRES. CRAZY HORSE CANYON ROAD REMAINED CLOSED SATURDAY NIGHT AS CREWS REMAINED ON SCENE, MOPPING UP HOT SPOTS.   THE CHARRED REMAINS OF A VEHICLE ARE BELIEVED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FIRES, HOWEVER THE OFFICIAL CAUSE REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

SC PARKNG FEE PRPSL-1-7/20/14-1435-PMD THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ, DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS HAS INTRODUCED A PROPOSAL. THE DEPARTMENT STATES, IT HAS BEEN ABSORBING DEBT FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS, AND HAS PROPOSED RAISING DOWNTOWN PARKING METER RATES AND THE CO

 

THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ, DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS HAS INTRODUCED A PROPOSAL.  THE DEPARTMENT STATES, IT HAS BEEN ABSORBING DEBT FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS, AND HAS PROPOSED RAISING DOWNTOWN PARKING METER RATES AND THE COST OF SOME PERMITS. THE REVENUES WOULD BE USED FOR PARKING GARAGE REPAIRS AND ROAD MAINTENANCE. SOME RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES BELIEVE A RATE INCREASE WOULD BE BAD FOR THE DOWNTOWN ECONOMY.  THE PROPOSAL GOES BEFORE THE CITY COUNCIL IN AUGUST.

SLNS SLPNG IN CAR WTH GUN-1-7/20/14-1415-PMD

 

A SALINAS MAN WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) MORNING.   POLICE INVESTIGATING REPORTS OF A MAN SLEEPING IN A CAR AT THE QUIKSTOP B WILLIAMS ROAD SAW A GUN NEAR THE SUSPECT.   OFFICERS SURROUNDED THE VEHICLE AND WOKE UP 27 YEAR OLD JOSE DURAN.  THE GUN TURNED OUT TO BE A B-B GUN.  DURAN WAS CITED FOR VIOLATING CITY CODE AND BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY JAIL FOR 3 OUTSTANDING TRAFFIC WARRANTS.

A HIGH SPEED CHASE FROM PACIFIC GROVE TO SALINAS ENDED WITH 2 PEOPLE BEHIND BARS. AT ABOUT 11:40 P-M  FRIDAY, OFFICERS WITNESSED A VEHICLE RUN A STOP SIGN IN PACIFIC GROVE AND ATTEMPTED A STOP.  THE DRIVER SPED OFF AND A CHASE ENSUED INVOLVING SEVERAL LOCAL, AS WELL AS COUNTY AND STATE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. THE SUSPECTS WERE BROUGHT TO A STOP IN SALINAS NEAR RIVER ROAD AND LOS PALMAS PARKWAY.  A SEARCH OF THE VEHICLE TURNED UP STOLEN ITEMS, BURGLARY TOOLS AND METHAMPHETAMINE. THE SUSPECTS WHO’S NAMES HAVE NOT BEEN RELEASED ARE DESCRIBED AS A 35 YEAR OLD MALE FROM SEASIDE AND A 36 YEAR OLD FEMALE FROM PACIFIC GROVE, BOTH WERE ARRESTED AND BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY  JAIL.

THE SALINAS SWAT TEAM WAS CALLED IN AFTER A SUSPECT FLED INTO A HOME FOLLOWING A CAR CHASE.  THE INCIDENT BEGAN WHEN OFFICERS ATTEMPTED A TRAFFIC STOP ON FREEDOM PARKWAY AT AROUND 3:13 P-M, SATURDAY. THE DRIVER, 29 YEAR OLD LUIS EDGAR GARCIA, SPED AWAY AND A CHASE ENSUED.  GARCIA, A KNOWN GANG MEMBER JUMPED FROM THE VEHICLE ON THE 15-HUNDED BLOCK OF ANTELOPE DRIVE, AND RAN INTO A HOME.   SWAT TEAM OFFICERS SURROUNDED THE RESIDENCE, AND AFTER  7 HOURS THEY ENTERED THE DWELLING AND TOOK GARCIA INTO CUSTODY AFTER FINDING HIM HIDING IN THE ATTIC. THE SUSPECT WAS BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY JAIL.
