BURGLARY OF TENTED HOME 10/29/13 0924 S.S.

A  WATSONVILLE  HOME  WAS  REPORTEDLY  BURGLARIZED  WHILE  IT WAS  TENTED  FOR  FUMIGATION.    ANYONE  WHO  MAY  HAVE  SEEN  ANY  SUSPICIOUS  ACTIVITY  AROUND  THE  HOME,  WHICH  IS ON THE 100  BLOCK  OF  EAST  LAKE  AVENUE,  IS  ENCOURAGED  TO  CONTACT  THE  WATSONVILLE  POLICE  DEPARTMENT.    THE  HOUSE  WAS  TENTED  LAST THURSDAY  MORNING,  AND  THE  ROBBERY  WAS  DISCOVERED  OVER  THE  WEEKEND  WHEN  PEST  CONTROL  WORKERS  REMOVED  THE  TENT.

BRANDON K SLACK - OBIT 10/29/13 0915 S.S.

A  29  YEAR-OLD  SANTA  CRUZ  HIGH  SCHOOL  STANDOUT AND  SERVICEMAN  DIED  RECENTLY  AT  HIS  HOME  IN  MONTANA.     SERVICES  WILL  BE  HELD  TODAY  (IN  MONTANA)  FOR  BRANDON  K  SLACK,  AND  A  LOCAL  MEMORIAL  HAS  BEEN  TENTATIVELY  SCHEDULED  TO  BE  HELD  AT  GARFIELD  PARK  (IN  SANTA  CRUZ)  NOVEMBER  10TH.   

AS  A  SENIOR  AT  SANTA CRUZ  HIGH  SCHOOL,  SLACK  SHINED  IN  FOOTBALL  AND  TRACK,  BREAKING  A  SCHOOL  RECORD  IN  THE  400-METER  RACE  BACK  IN 2002.   HE  IS  SURVIVED  BY  HIS  MOTHERFATHERSISTER,  AND  A  DAUGHTER.

THREE-VEHICLE CRASH IN SANTA CRUZ 102813 1830 og

ACCORDING TO AUTHORITIES, SPEED WAS A CONTRIBUTOR TO A THREE CAR ACCIDENT YESTERDAY MORNING (MON) AT 8 A-M ON HIGHWAY 1 AT MORRISSEY BOULEVARD.     A 20-YEAR OLD SANTA CRUZ MAN LOST CONTROL OF HIS FORD RANGER AS HE ENTERED THE HIGHWAY AND COLLIDED WITH A TOYOTA 4-RUNNER AND A PONTIAC TORRENT.     THE 4-RUNNER RAN INTO THE CONCRETE RETAINING WALL UNDER THE MORRISSEY BOULEVARD BRIDGE.  ALL THREE DRIVERS HAD MINOR INJURIES.   THE C-H-P REMINDS DRIVERS TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE RAINING CONTINUALLY FOR THE ROADWAYS TO BE SLICK.

HIGHWAY 1 PROJECT TAGGED WITH GRAFFITI 10/28/13 1630 og

THE NEW SOUND WALL ALONG THE HIGHWAY 1 WIDENING PROJECT BETWEEN SOQUEL AVENUEAND MORRISSEY BOULEVARD IN SANTA CRUZ WAS GRAFFITI’D AGAIN RECENTLY.  SINCE FEBRUARY 2012, THE PROJECT HAS BEEN TAGGED AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN TIMES.  THE GRAFFITI HAS RANGED FROM SMALL TAGS TO THIS MOST RECENT EVENT WHICH IS 75-FEET LONG, SPANS THREE WALLS AND IS MULTI-COLORED.   AS A DETERRENT, THE LANDSCAPING PLAN INCLUDES PLANTING THICK SHRUBBERY ALONG THE SOUND WALL.       THE SANTA CRUZ REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CLEAN-UP UNTIL THE PROJECT IS COMPLETE WHEN CALTRANS WILL TAKE OVER RESPONSIBILITY.   THE COMMISSION PLANS TO COLLABORATE WITH C-H-P AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO TRY TO CATCH THE VANDALS IN THE ACT.

COUNTRY SINGER VISITS SCHOOLS 10/28/13 1800 OG

ON MONDAY, IN HONOR OF NATIONAL BULLYING PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH, COUNTRY SINGER LIZZIE SIDER VISITED TWO CENTRAL COAST SCHOOLS.     STUDENTS AT LINCOLN SCHOOL IN SALINAS AND R.O. HARDIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN HOLLISTER HEARD FROM THE 15- YEAR OLD SIDER ABOUT HER OWN EXPERIENCES WITH BULLYING AND HER INSPIRATION FOR HER SONG “BUTTERFLIES”.    STUDENTS ALSO SPENT THEIR MORNING LEARNING HOW TO IDENTIFY A BULLY AND WHAT TO DO IF THEY ARE A VICTIM.     THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS SAYS BULLYING IS THE MOST COMMON FORM OF VIOLENCE IN AMERICAN SOCIETY WITH MORE THAN 3 MILLION KIDS EFFECTED EACH YEAR.
