STOLEN COMPUTERS -9/8/13-2442-PMD

A CRAIGSLIST DEAL TURNED INTO A ROBBERY IN SANTA CRUZ FRIDAY NIGHT.   THAT AFTER A 38 YEAR OLD SANTA CRUZ MAN, WHO HAD POSTED 2 LAPTOP COMPUTERS FOR SALE, AGREED TO MEET WITH A POTENTIAL BUYER.  ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THE MAN WENT TO THE AGREED UPON MEETING SPOT ON RIVER STREET.  WHERE A CAR PULLED UP AT ABOUT 8:30 P-M AND A WOMAN GOT OUT AND HANDED THE VICTIM AN ENVELOPE THEN QUICKLY TOOK THE LAPTOPS TOWARD THE WAITING CAR.  THE MAN TRIED TO STOP THE SUSPECT, BUT SHE WAS ABLE TO MAKE OFF WITH THE LAPTOPS, AS THE VICTIM CLUNG TO THE CAR AND WAS DRAGGED A SHORT DISTANCE, SUSTAINING SCRAPES ON HIS KNEES.   THE ENVELOPE CONTAINED COUNTERFEIT BILLS PRODUCED FROM A HOME COMPUTER PRINTER.   THE SUSPECT IS DESCRIBED AS WHITE, ABOUT 25 YEARS OLD, 5 FEET TALL, ABOUT 140 POUNDS, WITH AUBURN HAIR.  THE GET AWAY DRIVER AND ANOTHER SUSPECT ARE ALSO BEING SOUGHT. ANY ONE WITH ANY INFORMATION IS URGED TO CONTACT THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE DEPARTMENT.

THE  SANTA ROSALIA FISHERMAN’S FESTIVAL TOOK PLACE  IN MONTEREY THIS WEEKEND.  MEMBERS OF MONTEREY’S ITALIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY BEGAN THE CEREMONY OF PARADING THE STATUE OF SANTA ROSALIA, THE PATRON SAINT OF FISHERMAN, THROUGH THE STREETS OF MONTEREY IN 1933. THE CUSTOM ORIGINATED ON THE ISLAND OF SICILY, WHERE MANY OF THE FAMILIES IN MONTEREY HAVE THEIR ROOTS. THE STATUE WAS CEREMONIOUSLY PARADED ON A FLOAT DOWN ALVARDO STREET , THEN HAND-CARRIED TO THE WHARF FOR A BLESSING BY THE BISHOP OF THE DIOCESE OF MONTEREY.   A 14 PERSON BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND 100 VOLUNTEERS PUT ON THE ANNUAL EVENT. SPECTATORS,  NUMBERING IN THE THOUSANDS, ENJOYED FOOD BOOTHS SERVING UP CALAMARI AND OTHER DELICACIES, ALONG WITH MUSIC AND TARANTELLA DANCERS

STOLEN PHONE 9/8/13 1640 GE

AFTER WATCHING A FOOTBALL GAME ON THURSDAY NIGHT, A WOMAN  RETURNED TO HER TRUCK ON HARVEY WEST BOULEVARD TO FIND HER WALLET AND PHONE STOLEN.   AFTER USING THE  FIND MY PHONE APP, SHE SUCCESSFULLY TRACKED THE PHONE FROM DOWNTOWN TO THE HOMELESS SERVICES CENTER AT 115A CORAL AVENUE  SHE THEN CALLED POLICE AND RODE ALONG WITH THE OFFICER AS THEY TRACKED THE PHONE TO FERRELL’S DOUGHNUT HOUSE  IN THE 1400 BLOCK OF OCEAN AVENUE.THE WOMAN SENT AN ALERT TO HER PHONE, CAUSING IT TO BEEP CONTINUALLY.  THE SUSPECT WAS SEEN COMING OUT OF THE SHOP WITH A COFFEE, DOUGHNUT AND BEEPING PHONE.   45 YEAR OLD  DENNIS ALLEN BALLARD WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE WAS FOUND IN POSSESSION OF THE VICTIM’S WALLET AND PHONE.   HE WAS ALSO IN POSSESSION OF BURGLARY TOOLS, COCAINE AND HEROIN.
BALLARD IS BEING HELD ON ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR BAIL.

MARINA LITERACY TRAINING-9/8/13-1358-PMD

THE MONTERY COUNTY FREE LIBRARY’S READ  PROGRAM IS LOOKING FOR MORE TUTORS. THE PROGRAM HELPS ADULTS BATTLING ILLITERACY, BY PROVIDING TUTORS TO HELP PEOPLE IMPROVE THEIR LITERACY SKILLS.  THE LIBRARY SYSTEM WILL BE HOLDING VOLUNTEER TRAINING AT ITS MARINA BRANCH TODAY (MONDAY) AND IN SEASIDE ON TUESDAY. SEASIDE POLICE MEETING-9/8/13-1328-PMD

THE POLICE SEASIDE DEPARTMENT PLANS TO HOLD A TOWN HALL MEETING TUESDAY NIGHT.  THE PURPOSE OF THE MEETING IS TO ADDRESS GANG VIOLENCE IN THE AREA.   POLICE OFFICIALS ALSO PLAN TO DISCUSS THE HIGH SURVEILLANCE CAMERA SYSTEM THAT HAS BEEN THE CENTER OF CONTROVERSY IN THE COMMUNITY.  THE EVENT IS SLATED FOR 6 P-M AT THE OLDEMEYER CENTER.   THE PUBLIC IS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.
