THE ANNUAL MESA COMPETITION TOOK PLACE IN A U-C-S-C ENGINEERING BUILDING ON SATURDAY.   AROUND 4-HUNDRED STUDENTS FROM SANTA CRUZAND MONTEREY COUNTIES’ MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS WERE INVOLVED IN PROJECTS FOR THE MATH, ENGINEERING, and SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT (MESA) COMPETITION. THE EVENT FEATURED CLASSIC ENGINEERING CHALLENGES, ALONG WITH SOME MORE MODERN CATEGORIES. IT IS KNOWN FOR BRINING LIKE MINDED STUDENTS TOGETHER, AS WELL AS INSTILLING INTEREST FOR THE SCIENCES IN PREVIOUSLY UNEXPOSED YOUTHS.

SC ARMED ROBBERY-3/2/14 832 PMD

SANTA CRUZ CONVENIENCE STORE WAS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT SATURDAY NIGHT. POLICE SOURCES SAY THAT AROUND 9 P-M, 2 HISPANIC MALES , 1 ARMED WITH A RIFLE, ENTERED THE 7-11 ON THE 24-HUNDRED BLOCK OF MISSION STREET. THE SUSPECTS MADE THE CLERK OPEN THE CASH REGISTER AND FLED WITH AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF MONEY. INVESTIGATORS ARE EXAMINING VIDEO FOOTAGE IN AN ATTEMPT TO IDENTIFY THE SUSPECTS. ANY ONE WITH ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THE CRIME IS URGED TO CONTACT THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE DEPARTMENT.

CLIMATE CHNG DISCUSSIONS-3/2/14 908 PMD

U-C-S-C WAS THE VENUE FOR A SERIES OF TALKS ON CLIMATE CHANGE ON SATURDAY.  GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, SCHOLARS AND MEMBERS OF VARIOUS COMMUNITIES MET FOR A NATIONAL CLIMATE CONFERENCE ON THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. DIFFERENT GROUPS SHARED THEIR VIEWPOINTS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS WITH ONE ANOTHER AND STATE PLANNING AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS.  1 GOAL OF THE MEETING WAS TO PUT CALIFORNIA’S LEADING GREEN TECHNOLOGIES ON DISPLAY TO THE NATION ANDOTHER INDUSTRIAL COUNTRIES.

Eastcliff and esplanade 3/1/14-1954-PMD

CAPITOLA VILLAGE EXPERIENCED SOME FLOODING ON SATURDAY.  A ROAD CLOSURE BARRICADE WENT UP AT THE ESPLANADE AROUND 11 A-M AS CITY WORKERS WORKED TO OPEN STORM DRAINS.  SOME BUSINESSES STARTED SAND BAGGING AS WAVES AND HIGH TIDES COMBINED WITH STORM RUN OFF BEGAN TO FLOOD THE AREA. HOWEVER, STORM DRAINS WERE CLEARED AND THE ROAD RE-OPENED BY 3 P-M WITH NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE.  EAST CLIFF DRIVEAT TWIN LAKES BEACH ALSO EXPERIENCED A BRIEF CLOSURE AS DRIFTWOOD AND SAND WAS REMOVED FROM THE ROADWAY.

Westcliff detour- sink hole 3/1/14-1937-PMD

THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE DEPARTMENT CLOSED A STRETCH OF WEST CLIFF DRIVE, SATURDAY.  THE CLOSURE CAME AFTER POLICE RESPONDED TO A 10 A-M REPORT OF A BLOW HOLE OPENING NEAR THE SIDE WALK IN THE AREA OF WOODROW AND WEST CLIFF.  OFFICERS ON SCENE FOUND A CAR SIZED SINK HOLE TO THE OCEAN BELOW. A DETOUR HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED WHILE ENGINEERS PERFORM ROADWAY SAFETY INSPECTIONS.
