No contest, beating death of SC woman 06/08/12 5:30p.m. TDH

A part-time santa cruz resident has pleaded no contest to killing a santa cruz woman in maui last year.   38-year-old Gerald galaway junior lived part time in santa cruz and part time in maui.  He is expected to live full time in prison, for as long as 40-years, after pleading to manslaughter and kidnapping charges, for causing the death of 35-year-old celestial dove cassman.   Galaway had faced murder charges, but he was able to plead to lesser charges as part of a deal with prosecutors.  Galaway was seen by witnesses this past September beating cassman and throwing her on the ground.   She was found dead at the scene, and, after fleeing and jumping off of a cliff into the ocean, galaway was arrested.   he is scheduled to be sentenced on september 11th. Cassman was an attorney for the city of santa cruz, she lived in the seabright neighborhood.

 

nob hill food bank fundraiser 06/08/12 0600 e.a.

a fundraiser has been launched by raley’s and pepsico that will benefit 72 food banks in northern california and nevada, including the community pantry in hollister.  now through june 12th, raley’s will donate 10 cents for every sale of specific products purchased at raley’s, bel-air, and nob hill foods. the products that qualify have been marked in the stores, with “pepsic food for families” display cards.  for more information, visit food for families dot org.

a new communication system has been launched by the gilroy police department that will automatically post updates to facebook and twitter, as well as send text messages, email and mobile notifications.  residents can sign up for nixle, the free service that facilitates the breaking news messages.  residents can tailor the service to be notified about updates that cater to specific interests such as public safety alerts, community information and events, and media releases.  to sign up for text alerts, text g p d alerts as one word, to 888 777.

witness ids stow suspects 06/08/12 0600 e.a.

the first eyewitness identification has been made in court of two defendents accused of severely beating santa cruz native bryan stow outside of dodger stadium last year.  the witness recalled in court yesterday that she saw a man that she identified as louie sanchez kicking stow in the head after knocking him to the ground.  she also identified suspect marvin norwood as another ASSAILANT that left the scene with sanchez. the two men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

sierra lamar suspect gets new attorney 06/08/12 0600 e.a.

the man accused of kidnapping and killing missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar has gotten a new attorney.  ken mandel, representing the santa clara county public defender’s office, has bowed out of the case involving antolin garcia-torres.  garcia-torres will now be represented by the alternate public defender’s office, which handles cases when the public defender cites a conflict. antolin garcia-torres’ next court date has been pushed back from july 10th to july 31st.
