PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT 3/8/13 9:00a DMF

A ONE DAY COMMUNITYWIDE EFFORT TO LINK THE HOMELESS WITH PRACTICAL SERVICES AND RESOURCES WILL HOLD ITS KICK-OFF EVENT MARCH 14th.        THE EVENT WILL BE HELD AT THE MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORY FROM 5 P.M. TO 7 P.M. AND IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.      A SILENT AUCTION WILL BE HELD AND LIGHT REFRESHMENTS AND WINE WILL BE SERVED.     PREVIOUS PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT EVENTS HAVE HELPED APPROXIMATELY 1,000 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVE PRACTICAL SERVICES SUCH AS HOUSING, SHELTER, EMPLOYMENT, HEALTHCARE AND TREATMENT RESOURCES.

ASSAULT ON A POLICE OFFICER 3/8/13 7:00a DMF

THE MAN ACCUSED OF SHOOTING AT GANG TASK FORCE OFFICERS AFTER A TRAFFIC STOP HAS PLEADED NO CONTEST.     34-YEAR-OLD NICHOLAS MARTINEZ OF SALINAS WAS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF ASSAULT ON A POLICE OFFICER WITH A SEMI-AUTOMATIC HANDGUN.    KNOWN SURENO GANG MEMBER MARTINEZ IS EXPECTED TO FACE 49 YEARS, 8 MONTHS IN STATE PRISON AND MUST SERVE 85 PERCENT OF HIS SENTENCE BEFORE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE.

NINTH GRADERS OF WATSONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL TOURED SEVERAL CITY FACILITIES ON WEDNESDAY.   CALLED “CIVICS DAY” THE TOUR WAS CONDUCTED IN COOPERATION WITH THE SCHOOL AND THE CITY OF WATSONVILLE.   THE TOUR SETUP BY WATSONVILLE MAYOR LOWELL HURST, AIMS TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN ABOUT FACILITIES AND SERVICES AVAILABLE TO RESIDENTS.

THE KING CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT IS HOSTING A WEEKLY COMMUNITY FORUM TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO SHARE IDEAS, ADDRESS CONCERNS AS WELL AS LEARN ABOUT RESOURCES. THE NEXT MEETING IS SCHEDULED FOR 10:00 A.M. MARCH 13th AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH ON 450 KING STREET. OTHER MEETINGS WILL BE HELD MARCH 21stAND 30th AT UNANNOUNCED LOCATIONS.
