Amgen Tour Returns to Monterey 11-05-13 19:50 av

America’s largest cycling race will return to the Central Coast next year.  Monterey will host the start of Stage 4 of the Amgen Tour of California on May 14th.  Cyclists will travel 100-miles along the Pacific Ocean before ending in Cambria.   The Tour of California is an eight-day Tour de France-style cycling road race that starts in Sacramento on May 11th and ends in Thousand Oaks on May 18th.  Monterey County last hosted the Tour of California in 2006.  For more information, go to www.amgentourofcalifornia.com.

Scotts Valley Caregiver Arrested 11-05-13 19:00 av

An in-home health-care provider has been arrested on suspicion of taking more than $20,000 from her Scotts Valley client.   Police arrested 42-year old Crystal Gilbert yesterday on suspicion of elder abuse, grand theft, and embezzlement after money was found missing from the man’s trust account. Police found two of the man’s credit cards after a search was conducted on Gilbert and her apartment.

SC Cyclist Killed After Driver Fell Asleep 11-05-13 17:00 av

An accident that killed a 40-year old Santa Cruz cyclist was caused after the driver of the vehicle that struck the man, said he fell asleep at the wheel.   The incident occurred Saturday at 11:30 a.m. when a 63-year old man driving a Tesla, drove into a group of cyclists riding in the opposite direction on Highway 1 near Dimeo Lane, and fatally struck one of the cyclists, Josh Alper.   Police say the impact of the crash caused Alper to go head-first into the Tesla’s windshield.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  Meanwhile the driver of the Tesla cooperated with investigators and was not arrested.

New Leader for Santa Cruz Non-Profit 11-05-13 16:30 av

The Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County announced today a Watsonville woman will now head the anti-poverty non-profit.  Maria-Elena De La Garza will step into the Executive Director position formerly held for 27-years by Christine Johnson-Lyons, who retired in September.  De La Garza was the deputy director of development and outreach at Janus of Santa Cruz, She also worked as Chief Executive officer for the Mexican American Community Services Agency in Santa Clara for 17 years.

Missing Man Found 11-05-13 16:00 av

A man who went missing from a Monterey Care Facility has been found safe.   Police say 62-year old Lee Elder was found in Pacific Grove today.   Elder was last seen at the Drake Avenue Facility around 7 a.m. yesterday, when he was reported missing.
