LONG-TIME MONTEREY COUNTY RESIDENT, CLAUDIO VALENZUELA, IS THE MONTEREY COUNTY REGISTRAR OF VOTERS EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.      HE STEPS INTO THIS ROLE AFTER HOLDING SEVERAL POSITIONS IN THE ELECTIONS DEPARTMENT FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, INCLUDING ASSISTANT REGISTRAR OF VOTERS.     VALENZUELA WILL OVERSEE THE ADMINISTRATION OF ALL PUBLIC ELECTIONS IN MONTEREY COUNTY.

COUPLE PURCHASE GOLDEN STATE THEATRE 3-10-14 1745 OG

A BAY AREA COUPLE, ERIC AND LORI LOCHTEFELD, ANNOUNCED TODAY (MON) THAT THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING THE HISTORIC 1926 GOLDEN GATE THEATRE IN DOWNTOWN MONTEREY.       THE COUPLE’S PLANS INCLUDE USING THE VENUE FOR LIVE MUSIC, COMEDY SHOWS, THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES, AND PRIVATE EVENTS, AMONG OTHERS.     THE THEATRE PROPERTY ALSO INCLUDES OFFICE SPACE AND FIVE STOREFRONTS , THAT ARE CURRENTLY OCCUPIED.     (THE LOCHTEFELDS PURCHASED THE HISTORIC FOX THEATRE IN REDWOOD CITY IN 2010 WHICH REPORTEDLY HELPED TO REVITALIZE THE DOWNTOWN AREA THERE)          THIS NEWS COMES AS THE MONTEREY CITY COUNCIL ARE PREPARING FOR A TOWN HALL MEETING TOMORROW (TUES) NIGHT TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF THE THEATRE, WHICH HAS BEEN UNCERTAIN FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.     THE LOCHTEFELDS WILL TAKE OVER OPERATIONS ON APRIL FIRST.

NEW SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC IN WATS 3-10-14 1730 OG

NEARLY HALF OF THE 6 THOUSAND DOGS AND CATS THAT END UP AT THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER COME FROM WATSONVILLE AND OTHER SOUTH COUNTY AREAS.     IN AN ATTEMPT TO REDUCE THE NUMBERS OF HOMELESS AND ABANDONED ANIMALS,   NEW LOW-COST SPAY AND NEUTER CLINIC IS OPEN IN WATSONVILLE.     THE CLINIC IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE COUNTY’S PLANNED PETHOOD PROGRAM AND THE LOCAL FRIENDS OF WATSONVILLE ANIMAL SHELTER NON-PROFIT.     THE CLINIC IS OPEN ON WEDNESDAYS AND IS CURRENTLY BOOKED OUT A MONTH IN ADVANCE.     SPAY AND NEUTERING COSTS ARE
5 DOLLARS FOR CATS, 50 DOLLARS FOR PIT BULLS AND CHIHUAHUAS, AND 100 DOLLARS FOR ALL OTHER DOGS.

WOMAN ARRESTED IN DEC HIT AND RUN 3-10-14 1700 OG

A LOS GATOS WOMAN, 47 YEAR OLD JOLINE FAYE COHEN, TURNED HERSELF IN AND WAS BOOKED ON SUSPICION OF FATAL HIT-AND-RUN IN THE DECEMBER 10TH 2013 DEATH OF 36-YEAR OLD SANTA CRUZ MOTORCYCLIST, MICHAEL SCHAUPP.      COHEN REPORTEDLY DROVE HER FORD EXPLORER INTO THE PATH OF SCHAUPP’S HONDA MOTORCYCLE AROUND 1:25 P-M ON THE NORTHBOUND SIDE OF HIGHWAY 17 ,  WHEN THE IMPACT THREW HIM  20 FEET ACROSS THE ROADWAY.     JOLINE COHEN ALLEGEDLY FLED THE SCENE AND ABANDONED HER CAR ON A NEARBY ROAD.     SHE IS SET TO BE ARRAIGNED TOMORROW (TUES) IN A SANTA CLARA COUNTY COURT.

HIGHWAY 101 REOPENED AFTER ACCIDENT 3-10-14 1645 OG

THE C-H-P HAS REOPENED ALL SOUTHBOUND LANES OF HIGHWAY 101 AT CRAZY HORSE CANYON RD AFTER A MAJOR TRAFFIC ACCIDENT EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON.     ACCORDING TO REPORTS, A BLACK LEXUS HIT THE CENTER DIVIDE, FLIPPED ONTO ITS ROOF, AND SLID 75 FEET.     A BIG RIG WAS LOCKING ALL THE SOUTHBOUND LANES AS A RESULT.     THE DRIVER OF THE LEXUS SUFFERED FROM A HEAD INJURY, CUTS, AND BRUISES.
