Max enforcement period 05/24/12 7:30p.m. TDH

This memorial day weekend will see more law enforcement officers on the roads.  The California highway patrol is expected to have every available officer on duty, from  6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday morning.  so-called “maximum enforcement periods” are declared when authorities expect an increased risk of D-U-I incidents.   In monterey county, additional local law enforcement will be deployed as part of the “avoid the 18” campaign.   Checkpoints are expected to be set up at multiple locations around the county, with at least 1 in salinas.

 

High schools among best 05/24/12 7p.m. TDH

A couple of central coast high schools have been recognized as some of the top high schools in the country.  Newsweek ranked carmel high school 256th on its list of america’s high schools.  That’s among the top 1-percent of schools.  Santa cruz’s pacific collegiate school was ranked 70th by newsweek, and was ranked 14th on the magazine’s list of top schools in the western part of the country.  Criteria for the rankings included graduation rate, percent of students going to college, test scores, and classes offered.

 

Most wanted arrest 05/24/12 6p.m. TDH

A 22-year-old wanted man was arrested in santa cruz thursday morning.  david brodie was listed among santa cruz county’s most wanted criminals, for an alleged probation violation.   He was arrested without incident at a restaurant, and was booked into santa cruz county jail.

 

Lamar suspect arraignment 05/24/12 5p.m. TDH

The 21-year-old man accused of murdering missing morgan hill teenager sierra lamar appeared in a santa clara county courtroom thursday.   antolin garcia-torres did not enter a plea at his arraignment.   He was arrested Monday night in connection with lamar’s disappearance.   lamar is now presumed dead by authorities.    garcia-torres is set to return to court on may 31.

WV tow company violations 05/24/12 5p.m. TDH

A Watsonville towing company has come under scrutiny, for allegations that the owner has been illegally towing vehicles.   Officials on the santa cruz county auto theft reduction and enforcement team say that the employees at tri-county towing and transport were towing vehicles that were parked on private property, and then attempting to fine the vehicle owners.  “Tri-county” owner manuel delgadillo and an employee, gino Bettencourt, were arrested on suspicion of embezzlement, vehicle theft, and conspiracy.  They were booked into santa cruz county jail.
