alternative, environmentally friendly produce shipping box was field tested in watsonville last week.  the wax-free boxes are designed to reduce greenhouse gases and excessive volume at the landfill.  green bay packing and interstate container manufacture the boxes, which use a vegetable oil coating instead of wax.  wax coated boxes account for 4.5 million tons of gasses each year, with 1.35 million tons of coated boxes that are landfilled or burned.

m.h. pot cookies arrest 04/23/12 0700 e.a.

a student at a morgan hill high school is in police custody after he allegedly distributed marijuana laced cookies to other students friday morning.  the live oak high school students became very ill after ingesting the pot-laced cookies, at least two students were treated by paramedics at the scene.  the suspect’s identity has not been released, but morgan hill unified school district officials have confirmed that the student is under 18.

the united states army recently honored a gilroy native and her husband for their service to the nation and its soldiers.  lori borgna-strong earned the commander’s award for public service for her outstanding service as a volunteer and community leader supporting the quality of life for soldiers and their families.  her husband, major general randolph strong, was presented with the distinguished service cross for exceptional merit throughout his 34 year career with the united states army.

earth day clean up 04/23/12 0700 e.a.

volunteers from santa cruz to monterey turned out yesterday to help clean up beaches and rivers to honor earth day.  853 pounds of pollution were stopped from getting into the monterey bay national marine sanctuary. 244 pounds of trash and 71 pounds of recyclables were recovered from river cleanups in santa cruz and monterey counties.  officials with save our shores said that this year was the biggest effort ever on earth day, with 555 volunteers.

Fatal wreck, HWY-101 04/22/12 7:40p.m. TDH

1-man died Sunday in a fatal car accident near chualar.  The accident south of salinas occurred at about 10 a.m. on highway-101 at old stage road, when a semi truck rear-ended the victim’s vehicle, causing the car to roll over and eject the driver.   the man was pronounced dead at the scene.  C-H-P investigators are trying to determine if charges should be filed against the truck driver.
