DROUGHT AND WILDLIFE-2/16/14-2123-PMD

THE SEVERITY OF THE DROUGHT IS EXPECTED TO BE PARTICULARLY HARD ON WILD LIFE POPULATIONS.  THE RECENT RAINFALL TOTALS AREN’T EXPECTED TO SLOWDOWN THE ENCROACHMENT OF ANIMALS FORAGING FOR FOOD IN RURAL AREAS AND CITIES. WILDLIFE RESCUE SERVICES ARE ALREADY SEEING NUMBERS OF CALLS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH LEANEST MONTHS OF THE YEAR IN THE FALL. THERE ARE CONCERNS THAT IF RAIN FALL NUMBERS REMAIN LOW THE REST OF THE SEASON, THAT ANIMAL RESCUE SERVICE WILL BE OVERWHELMED.  EXPERTS ARE URGING RESIDENTS NOT TO LEAVE OUT PET FOOD OR WATER AND TO DISCOURAGE DEER WHICH ATTRACT LARGE PREDATORS.

THE ART WORK OF JOHN LENNON WAS ON DISPLAY AT THE CARMEL PLAZA IN CARMEL OVER THE WEEKEND.  THE EVENT FEATURED DRAWINGS, SKETCHES AND LYRICS OF THE POP STAR. THE EXHIBIT WAS TITLED IMAGINE THERE’S NO HUNGER AND WAS A FUND RAISER WITH ALL PROCEEDS GOING TO THE MONTEREY COUNTY FOOD BANK.

Salinas fire-2/16/14-2026-PMD

A SALINAS FIRE FIGHTERS RAN ACROSS A FIRE SATURDAY AFTERNOON.  FIRE OFFICIALS SAY A FIRE ENGINE WAS DRIVING NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF SAN CLEMENTE AVENUEAND KIRKWOOD WHEN THEY SPOTTED SMOKE COMING FROM A HOME.  FIRE CREWS BATTLED THE BLAZE WHICH HAD STARTED IN THE LIVING ROOM AND SPREAD IN TO THE ATTIC. NO ONE WAS HOME AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE. THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

national monuments -2/16/14-2005-PMD

the pinnacles national park reported having over 1-thousand visitors by noon on sunday.   according to park sources the main parking lots were full before 10 a-m and visitors were being shuttled in.  attendance at the pinnacles has increased ever since it became a national park. however officials say the recent warm weather and the fact that ADMISSION to all 401 national parks is free for the presidents day weekend is thought to be responsible for the weekends high numbers.

library board DECISION -2/16/14-1932-PMD

the santa cruz metropolitan transit district’s proposal to merge a new transit center and main library branch has been rejected.  the joint powers authority governs the 10 branch county wide library system.  the members of the board cited safety concerns for library goers, especially children and the high bus traffic of a metro center. also at issue is the second story pacific avenue location of the proposal.  the group also decided against increasing library hours until a viable new main branch plan and FUNDING is PROCURED.
