the monterey county board of supervisors has signaled its approval for a new transit agency and business park to be built near the former fort ord. the board voted 4 to 1 to tentatively approve the development project until their meeting july 12th, when objections to the plan will be presented.  marina city officials have asked the board to consider the city’s airport as a more appropriate hub for the transit agency’s headquarters.

togos tip jar theft 06/15/11 0700 e.a.

a san juan bautista man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a tip jar from a togo’s restaurant and threatening to shoot a customer.  21 year-old rion redko is accused of taking the tip jar, (which had 3 dollars inside), and demanding a woman’s wallet twice before fleeing the airline highway location.  redko was arrested at 7 p.m. on monday, a few hours after the attempted robbery.  he was booked into san benito county jail on charges of petty theft, attempted robbery, and parole violation.

s.c. schools lawsuit 06/15/11 0700 e.a.

a lawsuit has been filed against santa cruz city schools and the city of santa cruz. the parents of a student, who had been hit by a pickup truck in front of mission hill middle school in 2009, allege that school administrators didn’t sufficiently SAFEGUARD king street and the sidewalks.  the lawsuit seeks to recover 130-thousand dollars in hospital bills that the student incurred as a result of the accident.  a countersuit has been filed by the city and by santa cruz city schools, claiming all negligence and injuries are the fault of the victim.  a santa cruz county superior court judge is expected to hear the case on august 5th.

special olympics – hollister 06/15/11 0900 e.a.

runners carrying the torch for the northern california special olympics summer games passed through hollister and gilroy this morning.  the hollister leg of the run began at 7 a.m. , led by california highway patrol officer jaime rios.  more than 500 law enforcement officers from various agencies PARTICIPATED in the run, which has brings the torch hundreds of miles through 21 counties before ending at the special olympic northern california summer games at u.c. davis.

Human Race – S.c. 06/15/11 0700 e.a.

the 31st annual human race in santa cruz brought in thousands of dollars for various non-profits.  235-thousand dollars was raised by race participants.  approximately 100 groups received donation checks from the human race, which is organized each year by the volunteer center of santa cruz.
