The 11th annual South-West regional barista competition was held in Santa Cruz this past week, with contestants from all over California. Entrants tried to impress the judges with their coffee preparing abilities and their own style. Finalist competed on Sunday, preparing four espressos, four cappuccinos, and four specialty drinks in 15 minutes. Los Angeles barista Eden-Marie Abramowicz of Intelligentsia Coffee took first prize. The top three finalists will go on to the national championships held in Boston in April.
A Prunedale man was arrested on domestic violence charges yesterday after his 8-year-old daughter called 911. The victim reported that her boyfriend, Michael Deangelo Smith, came home angry shortly after 6pm and pushed her from their kitchen into the bedroom. She received red marks on her face, neck, and chest during the struggle. The couple’s daughter called 911 after seeing her father grab he mother by the hair and thought she heard her being hit in the other room. Smith was arrested and booked on charges of domestic violence, false imprisonment, and child endangerment.
A San Benito County man accused of molesting a 5-year-old girl in February of last year failed to appear for a doctor’s evaluation as part of his plea deal. 52-year-old Arnaldo Mateo Hernandez accepted what is known as the “West plea” which does not constitute an express admission of guilt but only consent to be punished as if guilty.
The psychological evaluation was meant to help determine the length of Hernandez sentence, based on his risk as an offender. Hernandez is now a fugitive on the felony charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a child.
Three bay area residents have been indicted by a federal grand jury on fraud and other charges including a 51-year-old Gilroy woman. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Anita Sharma, along with two men, committed mail fraud, bank fraud, and made false statements on residential mortgage loan applications for more than $2.1 million. Four properties in Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, and Elk Grove were charged in the 12-count indictment. Those properties were all subject to foreclosure, which resulted in the loss of more than $1.2 million.
