SWAT TEAM ARRESTS SALINAS MAN 02-02-11 07:30 a.v.

A Salinas man was tasered this morning after  he was served with a search warrant last night . Police went to the apartment of Marco Gonzales on the 200 block of Santa Rita Street shortly after 10 p.m. to serve the former mall security officer after he threatened to harm people at the mall.A  SWAT team was called in and spent 6 hours trying to talk Gonzales out of his apartment . Gonzales confronted SWAT officers at the entry to his apartment and was tasered before being taken into custody. He was transported for a mental health exam pending booking into Monterey County Jail.

S.V. HWY 17 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT 02-02-11 06:00 a.v.

Scotts Valley city leaders are expected to discuss several issues tonight during it’s city council meeting. A design-review extension for 2 planned developments will be considered along with a one-year moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries. The council is expected to approve extending plans for a 46-unit town center homes townhouse project planned for Blue Bonnet Lane, between Kings Village and Bean Creek Roads. Council members are also expected to vote on extending the design review permit for 1-year on 10-duplexes and 20 town homes planned for the end of Lundy Lane off Mount Hermon Road.

MCO NEW WELCOME CENTER 02-01-11 19:00 a.v.

In an effort to attract visitors, a Salinas group has been awarded a contract to open a California Welcome Center. The new Central Coast center, which is expected to bring in over 100-thousand visitors annually by 2013, is set to open in April. The new 15-hundred square foot Welcome Center is expected to be located over the Cannery Row Company in Monterey, and will emphasize tourist information about the region, provide data about attractions throughout the state and will also be able to make bookings for hotels and other attractions. The center will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 7-days a week.

ELKHORN SLOUGH FATAL COUPLE IDENTIFIED 02-01-11 17:00 a.v.

2 people killed during a train accident Sunday in Monterey County have been identified Police say 48-year old Steven Russell and 50-year old Priscilla Flores, both Fresno residents, died after their truck was hit by a passenger train traveling southbound in the Elkhorn Slough area. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene after the 1:15 p.m. collision that occurred at a non-gated railroad crossing at the entrance of Kirby Park off Elkhorn Road. No injuries were reported to the 150 passengers aboard the train which was headed for Los Angeles.

MONTEREY CAB DRIVER STRIKE 02-01-11 17:00 a.v.

Cab drivers on the Monterey Peninsula are protesting a new licensing authority that is being run by Monterey-Salinas Transit. Multiple Cab Companies held a protest today at the Monterey Plaza Hotel saying the strike is a sign of solidarity against regulatory plans by the new Monterey County Regional Taxi Authority, who are expected to put cab drivers out of business through high inspection and permit costs, and coverage requirements. Officials with Monterey-Salinas Transit say the idea to regulate drivers came from the regional taxi authority, which said it needed the help from an outside agency.
