S.C. INCREASES ARANA GULCH ACCESS- 05-15-14 12:00 SG

THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ IS INCREASING ACCESS TO THE ARANA GULCH WITH MULTI-USE TRAILS.     THE TRAIL SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND WILL PROVIDE A CROSS-TOWN LINK FOR BOTH PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS. ADDITIONALLY THE PROJECT WILL PROVIDE HABITAT PROTECTION AND GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE.     THE NEARLY ONE-MILE LONG TRAIL SYSTEM IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN NOVEMBER.

SALINAS RIVER WATER PERMIT- 05-15-14 10:30 SG

MONTEREY COUNTY WATER OFFICIALS HAVE ACCEPTED A RECOMMENDATION TO USE A SALINAS RIVER WATER RIGHT PERMIT.     MEMBERS OF THE WATER RESOURCES AGENCY ACCEPTED THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE’S PROPOSAL IN A MEETING YESTERDAY MORNING (WED).      THE PERMIT WOULD DIVERT RIVER WATER FOR AGRICULTURAL AND URBAN USE.    THE AGENCY ADDED THEY WANT THE RIVER PROJECT TO BE PART OF A LARGER SOLUTION FOR SALINAS VALLEY.     THE PROPOSAL WILL BE REVIEWED NEXT BY THE FULL AGENCY BOARD ON JUNE 2ND.

S.C. HOMELESS BEATING SENTENCE DELAY- 05-15-14 9:00 SG

THE SENTENCING FOR THREE TRANSIENTS INVOLVED IN THE FATAL BEATING OF A HOMELESS MAN IN SANTA CRUZHAS BEEN DELAYED.    CHARLES POWERS WAS FOUND BEATEN TO DEATH IN DEPOT PARK IN NOVEMBER 2012.    SHAELYN GONZALES, MICHAEL HUDSON, AND JASON WEILAND WERE ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF HIS MURDER, BUT HAVE PLEADED GUILTY TO LESSER CHARGES.    THE THREE WILL TESTIFY AGAINST SUSPECT JEREMIAH LONG.     THEIR TRIAL HAS BEEN DELAYED TO COINCIDE WITH LONG’S HEARING ON JUNE 13TH.

LITTLE LEAGUE SUPPLIES STOLEN- 05-15-14 8:30 SG

MORE THAN 4-THOUSAND-DOLLARS WORTH OF SUPPLIES HAVE BEEN STOLEN FROM A GREENFIELDLITTLE LEAGUE.      OFFICIALS SAY SOMEONE BROKE INTO THEIR CONCESSION BUILDING AND STOLE EQUIPMENT AND CASH.      IT IS THE THIRD TIME THE ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN ROBBED THIS YEAR.      ANYONE WHO CAN HELP IS ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT LITTLE LEAGUE PRESIDENT LORENA GONZALEZ.
