SEASIDE MAN FACES ELDER ABUSE CHARGES 09-04-2013 10:30 av

A SEASIDE MAN WAS SENTENCED TO SPEND FOUR YEARS BEHIND BARS AFTER POSING AS A PHONY CONTRACTOR AND STEALING CHECKS FROM THE ELDERLY.   29-YEAR OLD NITO SEFA GAINED ACCESS TO SENIOR’S HOMES IN MARINA AND DEL REY OAKS BY HANDING OUT FAKE BUSINESS CARDS PRINTED WITH A FALSE CONTRACTOR’S LICENSE.   SEFA, WHO CLAIMED TO PROVIDE HOME REPAIRS FOR HIS SEVEN ELDERLY VICTIMS, WAS CONVICTED OF 10-FELONIES, INCLUDING RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY, ELDER ABUSE AND FORGERY.    SEFA WAS ALSO ORDERED TO PAY MORE THAN $50,000 IN RESTITUTION.

MISTRIAL DENIED IN MO. COUNTY MURDER CASE 09-04-2013 08:00 av

A MOTION FOR A MISTRIAL WAS DENIED THIS WEEK FOR A 30-YEAR OLD MONTEREY COUNTY MURDER CASE.  ATTORNEYS FOR HOMICIDE SUSPECT 53-YEAR OLD UBALDO SANCHEZ FILED THE MOTION AFTER A WITNESS IN THE CASE ADMITTED TO COMMUNICATING WITH A JUROR DURING A COURTROOM BREAK.  THE MISTRIAL WAS REQUESTED ON THE GROUNDS THE WITNESS, CYNTHIA LORENZI UNFAIRLY SHARED A MOMENT OF CAMARADERIE WITH THE JURY.    SANCHEZ IS SUSPECTED OF FATALLY SHOOTING 32-YEAR OLD MANUEL SANDOVAL, IN A SOUTH MONTEREY COUNTY RANCH IN MAY OF 1982.

MONTEREY COUNTY DISPATCHER ARRESTED 09-04-2013 06:30 av

A MONTEREY COUNTY DISPATCHER WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY OVER THE WEEKEND AFTER WALKING OUT OF A GROCERY STORE WITH UNPAID ITEMS IN HIS SHOPPING CART.   POLICE SAY 35-YEAR OLD JON BROWN HAD $100 WORTH OF GROCERIES IN HIS CART, WHEN HE LEFT THE CONSTITUTION BOULEVARD SAFEWAY AFTER HIS BANK CARD DIDN’T WORK WHILE PURCHASING A DRINK FROM THE STORE’S STARBUCKS.   BROWN WAS ARRESTED AT HIS WORK AN HOUR LATER ON SHOPLIFTING CHARGES INCLUDING FELONY BURGLARY AND ENTERING WITH THE INTENT TO STEAL.

HOLLISTER PARK MTN. LION SIGHTING 09-04-2013 07:00 av

A HOLLISTER PARK HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN AFTER A MOUNTAIN LION WAS REPORTED IN THE AREA.   POLICE SAY BRIGANTINO PARK, OFF SAN JUAN HOLLISTER ROAD, WILL BE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.   THE BIG CAT WAS SEEN TUESDAY MORNING.   RESIDENTS MEANWHILE ARE BEING REMINDED TO REMAIN CALM IF A MOUNTAIN LION IS SPOTTED, AND TO CALL 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY WITH THE LOCATION OF THE SIGHTING.

CENTRAL COAST TEEN VIOLENCE REPORT 09-04-2013 07:30 av

A NEW STUDY ON YOUTH CRIME ON THE CENTRAL COAST SHOWS GANGS ARE INFLUENCING THE YOUNG AT AN EARLIER AGE.   THE STUDY, BY THE LUCILLE PACKARD FOUNDATION FOR CHILDREN’S HEALTH, FOUND THAT IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, 11.6-PERCENT OF SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS PROFESSED TO BEING GANG MEMBERS.  WHILE 6-PERCENT OF MONTEREY COUNTY SEVENTH GRADERS SAY THEY BROUGHT WEAPONS, OTHER THAN GUNS, TO SCHOOL WITH NEARLY 3-PERCENT SAYING THEY BROUGHT GUNS ON CAMPUS. THE STUDY ALSO FOUND THAT 17-CHILDREN, BETWEEN THE AGES OF 5-TO-19 WERE KILLED IN 2010 IN MONTEREY COUNTY, WHILE TWO TEENS WERE KILLED DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD IN SANTA CRUZ COUNTY.
