SWAT HOSTAGE TRAINING 09-10-2013 10:30 av

A HOSTAGE RESCUE EXERCISE WAS CONDUCTED IN MONTEREY COUNTY YESTERDAY..   THE DRILL, WHICH TOOK PLACE ON THE TARMAC AT SALINAS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, WAS PART OF AN ANNUAL EFFORT TO TRAIN THE MONTEREY COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT SWAT TEAM.   THE HANDS-ON TRAINING IS USED AS PRACTICE FOR THE DEPARTMENT IN THE EVENT OF AN ACTUAL HOSTAGE SITUATION.

HUMAN REMAINS/BONNY DOON UPDATED 09-10-2013 08:30 av

A human skeleton was found last week in Santa Cruz County.   Authorities say the remains were discovered Friday by a utility worker working in a wooded area near Smith Grade Road and Warren Drive.   Investigators have not yet determined the person’s gender or age.  Meanwhile, a Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputy says they are still looking into whether the body was related to recent homicides or missing person cases in the county.

SALINAS WATER PROJECT MTG. 09-09-2013 08:30 av

A plan that would use agricultural wash water and storm-water runoff from Salinas to a recycled water project for the Monterey Peninsula, will be considered tonight.   Salinas city council members will discuss negotiations with Monterey Regional Water Pollution Control Agency in an effort to use the agency’s proposed groundwater replenishment project.   The project is expected to provide a new water supply to offset the state ordered cutback in pumping from the Carmel River, that is slated to take full effect by 2017.

MONTEREY MURDER TRIAL 09-09-2013 07:30 av

A murder trial of a man accused in a 16-year old Monterey County teen homicide, got underway this week.  Jury selection began yesterday  for the trial of Jacobo Ruelas.   Ruelas is accused of killing Monterey High School student Kristopher Olinger on the Pacific Grove recreation trail in 1996.   Prosecutors allege Ruelas and his younger brother Angel robbed Olinger, stabbed him repeatedly and then stole his car.   Jacobo, who was arrested seven years ago, pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

GROCERY THIEF ARRAIGNED 9/9/13 16:30 OG

Jon Brown, A Monterey County dispatcher, was arraigned today (Monday) on misdemeanor charges of theft for allegedly stealing more than $100 worth of groceries from a Salinas Safeway.      At the arraignment, Brown asked for more time to hire an attorney and was ordered to appear in court again October 9th .    Brown, who has worked for the county for five years, is on paid administrative leave.
