BURGLARY ARREST - 03/24/14 11:32 S.S.

A 49 YEAR-OLD MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY BROKE INTO A WATSONVILLE STORAGE AREA EARLY THIS MORNING. EDWARD SANCHEZ TURRO INITIALLY FLED FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS (THAT WERE INVESTIGATING REPORTS OF A POSSIBLE BREAK-IN IN THE 14 HUNDRED BLOCK OF FREEDOM BOULEVARD). TURRO WAS BOOKED INTO SANTA CRUZ COUNTY JAIL.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR THE ALISAL UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS PROPOSED AN INCREASE IN DEVELOPMENT FEES. THE FEES COLLECTED ARE USED IN NECESSARY FACILITY UPGRADES AND CLASSROOM CONSTRUCTION (IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE THE ENROLLMENT GROWTH CAUSED BY BUSINESS /RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT). THE BOARD WILL HOLD A PUBLIC HEARING ON WHETHER TO APPROVE THE PROPOSAL.

THE SANTA CRUZ POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS TEAMED UP WITH THE TEEN CENTER AND YOUTH SERVICES IN ORDER TO CREATE A BICYCLE DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM. HUNDREDS OF BICYCLES ARE FOUND (OR SEIZED) BY POLICE OFFICERS AND THEY’RE LOOKING TO PUT THEM BACK INTO USE BY TEENS. TEENS WHO WANT THE BIKES MUST BE YOUNGER THAN 18 AND SANTA CRUZ RESIDENTS. TEENS CAN ALSO APPLY DIRECTLY THROUGH THE TEEN CENTER. THE SANTA CRUZ TEEN CENTER IS LOCATED AT 301 CENTER STREET.
(NOT ALL BIKES ARE IN PERFECT CONDITION, BUT THE POLICE PROPERTY ATTENDANT, OFFICERS, YOUTH GROUP LEADERS OR EVEN THE TEENS THEMSELVES CAN HELP MAKE THE NECESSARY FIXES ON THE BICYCLES).

THE MAN KILLED IN AN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN BIG SUR LAST WEEK HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A SELMA MAN. 36 YEAR-OLD PAROLEE-AT-LARGE HECTOR CHAIREZ, WHO WAS WANTED ON VARIOUS FELONY CHARGES, WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AFTER THE SHOOTING ON PALO COLORADO ROAD. HE WAS SHOT AFTER LEADING POLICE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ON A HIGH SPEED CHASE FROM CARMEL TO BIG SUR THURSDAY.
