SLV WATERSHED GRANT 03-01-11 19:00 a.v

The San Lorenzo Valley Water District is accepting proposals for a program aimed at improving the health of the San Lorenzo River watershed. Proposals will be accepted through March 9th for it’s 2011 Education Grant Program. Funding of up to $2,500 is available for 7 projects. District leaders are said to be interested in promoting such projects that include surveying and mapping activities that focus on identifying organisms, invasive species and large, woody material in stream corridors.

SALINAS FIREWORKS APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE 03-01-11 18:00 a.v.

Applications to sell fireworks will soon be considered for those Salinas non-profit organizations who wish to raise money. Applications must be submitted no later than March 31st at 4 p.m. The city is said to begin the review process by April 4th before permits to legally sell fireworks are issued to those local groups. The qualified applicants are expected to be notified on April 11th. To apply, applications are available for pick-up at the Permit Center at 65 West Alisal Street in Salinas.

P.G. CITY COUNCIL MTG. 03-01-11 17:30 a.v.

Pacific Grove City Council members are expected to present an outline of the city’s 2011-12 budget, along with a budget planning forecast to the city’s Deputy City manager tomorrow. The council is said to also discuss a report on storm water discharges, proposed amendments to the city tree ordinance along with the possibility of installing PG&E smart meters. A closed session will take place at 5:15 p.m., followed by an open session at 6 p.m.

APTOS DRUG RAID ARREST 03-01-11 17:00 a.v.

A 32-year old man was arrested over the weekend after he was served a search warrant at his Aptos home. Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived Saturday at 10 a.m. to the Redwood Drive home of Brandon King, and found over $40,000 in cash, 9-guns, over 1,400 marijuana plants and more. King, who reportedly has a membership card for a medical marijuana dispensary in Santa Cruz, was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of possession drugs for sale and marijuana cultivation.

U.C.S.C. EDUCATION PROTEST 03-01-11 16:30 a.v.

Clothing was optional for some U.C. Santa Cruz students who protested budget cuts to the U.C. system during a demonstration today. The protesters, who included both clothed and unclothed students, spelled out the words “free education” on the East Field of the University Campus. The reported non-violent demonstration was intended to bring attention to the idea that public higher education can and should be free and accessible to all California residents.
