THE CITY OF SANTA CRUZ IS NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR A SERVICE AWARD.     THE OFFICER JIM HOWES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD WAS CREATED IN 2007 IN HONOR OF THE RETIREMENT OF SCPD VETERAN HOWES.   THE AWARD IS TYPICALLY GIVEN TO ONE CITY EMPLOYEE AND ONE COMMUNITY MEMBER.   TO NOMINATE AN INDIVIDUAL, ONE MUST SUBMIT A NOMINATION FORM AND A SHORT NARRATIVE BY 5 PM ON NOVEMBER 6TH.  FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT CITYOFSANTACRUZ.COM.

A BILL THAT WILL ALLOW THE SALE OF BEER AT CALIFORNIA FARMERS MARKETS HAS BEEN SIGNED INTO LAW.    THE MEASURE WILL ENABLE BEER MANUFACTURERS TO APPLY TO THE DEPARTMENT OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONTROL FOR A SPECIALIZED PERMIT.   THE LICENSE WOULD ALSO ALLOW BREWERIES TO SERVE BEER AT PRIVATE EVENTS.   THE LAW WILL GO INTO EFFECT ON JANUARY 1ST.

WATSONVILLE ATTEMPTED MURDER NEAR OHLONE PARKWAY- 10-10-14 6:30 SG

WATSONVILLE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A SHOOTING THAT INJURED A MAN LAST NIGHT (THURS).    OFFICIALS SAY THE INCIDENT OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER 9 WHEN TWO CARS MET AT THE INTERSECTION OF OHLONE PARKWAY AND WEST BEACH STREET.  SHOTS WERE FIRED FROM ONE VEHICLE, INJURING THE DRIVER OF THE SECOND.  OFFICERS ARRIVED IN THE PARKING LOT OF PALM BEACH STATE PARK TO FIND THE 29-YEAR-OLD VICTIM WITH A NON-LIFE-THREATENING GUNSHOT WOUND.  HE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL.    THE SUSPECT VEHICLE HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS A LIGHT COLORED HONDA ACCORD WITH 4 SUBJECTS INSIDE.  IT WAS LAST SEEN TRAVELLING SOUTHBOUND ON LEE ROAD TOWARDS HIGHWAY 1. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS URGED TO CONTACT WATSONVILLE POLICE.

 3 SALINAS GANG MEMBERS CONVICTED OF THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF A POLICE OFFICER HAVE BEEN SENTENCED. IN APRIL OF 2013, THE 3 MEN LED POLICE ON A HIGH SPEED CHASE AFTER FIRING GUNSHOTS AT AN OFFICER.   2 OF THE MEN WERE CAPTURED WHEN THE CAR CRASHED INTO A TREE AT NATIVIDAD CREEK PARK, 28 YEAR OLD ALEXANDER PADILLA AND 27 YEAR OLD DANIEL SANCHEZ WERE SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON. THE SHOOTER 28 YEAR OLD DANIEL MAGDALENO WAS TAKEN IN TO CUSTODY 2 DAYS LATER, HE WAS SENTENCED TO 30 YEARS IN PRISON.

THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT REPORTED RESERVOIR WATER LEVELS YESTERDAY (THURS). THE REPORT STATES THAT THE CHESBRO RESERVOIR, LOCATED NEAR MORGAN HILL IS NOW AT 1.1 PERCENT OF CAPACITY, WHICH IS ACTUALLY UP FROM LAST MONTH WHEN THE LEVEL WAS 9 TENTHS OF A PERCENT. THE COUNTY OPERATES 10 RESERVOIRS WITH THE HIGHEST WATER LEVEL AT 7.3 PERCENT FOR THE STEVENS CREEK STORAGE FACILITY.   RESERVOIRS SUPPLY 25 PERCENT OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY’S WATER, AND IF RAINS RETURN TO NON DROUGHT LEVELS COULD TAKE YEARS TO RETURN TO NORMAL LEVELS.
