UC-SANTA CRUZ HAS RECEIVED A $1.45-MILLION DOLLAR GRANT TO TRAIN IT’S FUTURE MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHERS.  THE GRANT WAS AWARDED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION IN AN EFFORT TO ENHANCE THE EXISTING NOYCE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, WHICH SUPPORTS UCSC STUDENTS WHO SEEK TO TEACH MATH AND SCIENCE IN LOCAL HIGH-NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS.    THE GRANT, WHICH PRIMARILY GOES TOWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UCSC UNDERGRADUATES, ALSO HELPS FUND A NEW UCSC PROGRAM IN SILICON VALLEY THAT WILL FOCUS ON TRAINING HIGH TECH-PROFESSIONALS WHO WANT TO BECOME TEACHERS.   THE GRANT ALSO SUPPORTS PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN UCSC, 7-COMMUNITY COLLEGES, AND FOUR HIGH NEED SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN NEW TEACHERS IN AREAS OF DISTRICT SHORTAGES.

MORGAN FIRE UPDATE 09-10-2013 13:30 av

ANOTHER LOCAL FIREFIGHTING AGENCY HAS BEEN DEPLOYED TO HELP FIGHT THE MORGAN FIRE CURRENTLY BURNING ON MOUNT DIABLO IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.    TWENTY-SIX MEMBERS OF THE CALIFORNIA CONSERVATION CORPS FROM THE MONTEREY BAY CENTER IN WATSONVILLE ARE ASSISTING CAL FIRE WITH LOGISTICAL SUPPORT.   OFFICIALS EXPECT THE WATSONVILLE CREW TO BE WORKING THERE FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS.  AS OF THIS MORNING, THE FIRE HAS CHARRED ROUGHLY 3,500 ACRES AND IS ABOUT 45% CONTAINED.  700 FIREFIGHTERS ARE BATTLING THE BLAZE INCLUDING 100-FIREFIGHTERS FROM THE TRI-COUNTY AREA.

APTOS BIKE THIEF ARRESTED 09-10-2013 12:30 av

AN APTOS BIKE THIEF IS BEHIND BARS AFTER REGISTERING A STOLEN BIKE IN HIS NAME.   POLICE SAY 32-YEAR OLD TITONIDAE WILDEN WAS SPOTTED RIDING A STOLEN BICYCLE BEFORE REGISTERING IT IN HIS OWN NAME AT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.   HE THEN TRIED TO SELL THE BIKE ON CRAIGSLIST, WHEN POLICE DISCOVERED THE SAME BIKE HAD BEEN REPORTED STOLEN SEVERAL DAYS LATER.  WILDEN WAS ARRESTED AND THE BIKE WAS RETURNED TO IT’S OWNER.  POLICE MEANWHILE REMIND BIKE OWNERS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF REGISTERING BICYCLES.  IN THE EVENT OF A THEFT, THE OWNER HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF HAVING THEIR BIKES RETURNED.

SWAT HOSTAGE TRAINING 09-10-2013 10:30 av

A HOSTAGE RESCUE EXERCISE WAS CONDUCTED IN MONTEREY COUNTY YESTERDAY..   THE DRILL, WHICH TOOK PLACE ON THE TARMAC AT SALINAS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, WAS PART OF AN ANNUAL EFFORT TO TRAIN THE MONTEREY COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT SWAT TEAM.   THE HANDS-ON TRAINING IS USED AS PRACTICE FOR THE DEPARTMENT IN THE EVENT OF AN ACTUAL HOSTAGE SITUATION.

HUMAN REMAINS/BONNY DOON UPDATED 09-10-2013 08:30 av

A human skeleton was found last week in Santa Cruz County.   Authorities say the remains were discovered Friday by a utility worker working in a wooded area near Smith Grade Road and Warren Drive.   Investigators have not yet determined the person’s gender or age.  Meanwhile, a Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputy says they are still looking into whether the body was related to recent homicides or missing person cases in the county.
