Sc harbor dredge fire-1/16/14-1640-PMD

 THE CREW OF THE SANTA CRUZ HARBOR’S DREDGING VESSEL ARRIVED TO WORK THURSDAY MORNING TO FIND SMOKE COMING OUT OF A GENERATOR COMPARTMENT.     SHORTLY AFTER 8:30 A-M,  A  FIRE FIGHTING BOAT WAS ASSISTED BY HARBOR PATROL AS WELL AS 3 FIRE ENGINES ON LAND.  THE SMALL FIRE, WHICH WAS CAUSED BY A HOSE COMING IN CONTACT WITH A GENERATOR WAS EXTINGUISHED QUICKLY.  THE DAMAGE TO THE VESSEL IS DESCRIBED AS MINOR AND SHOULDN'T EFFECT DREDGING OPERATIONS.

SV Barn Demolition Awaits Pasatiempo Decision 01-16-14 12:15 av

A decision to tear down a historic polo barn in Scotts Valley is on hold for at least another 30 days.   During a meeting last night, the city council agreed to see if a relocation deal can be made with Pasatiempo Golf Course.  At issue is a one-million dollar exchange deal from a housing developer to demolish the barn, so that a public park can be built on the site, along with 40 new homes.   The developer initially agreed to preserve the structure when they purchased the Santa’s Village Road property in 2009, but now claims it’s unsafe and wants to tear it down.

Santa Cruz Superintendant Retiring 01-16-14 11:30 av

After five years of leading Santa Cruz City Schools, Superintendent Gary Bloom will be retiring.     Bloom, who is 60-years of age, announced his retirement to trustees and staff during a board meeting yesterday.     The decision comes at the end of a five year commitment he made after being hired in April of 2009.   Bloom is being credited for his role in stabilizing the budget, eliminating the achievement gap, modernizing information technology and supporting green policy making.    The Board of Trustees will be determining the process of Bloom’s replacement.

Aptos/Soquel Power Outage 01-16-14 10:00 av

A power outage is currently affecting 170 PG&E customers in the Aptos and Soquel areas.   A PG&E spokesperson says the cause of the outage is under investigation.   Power went out at 8 a.m. impacting certain areas such as State Park Drive; Old San Jose Road; Soquel Drive and Glen Haven Road.   Expected restoral time is around 12 o’clock this afternoon.

Salinas Robbery Suspects Sought 01-16-14 09:30 av

Salinas Police are searching for 3 suspects who robbed and physically assaulted a teacher last night.    Police say a teacher and a student at Salinas High School were closing up the observatory at 9:40 p.m., when they were approached by 3 hispanic males who demanded the student’s watch and cell phone, before grabbing a laptop out of the teacher’s hands.   The teacher fought back when the suspects hit and kicked him several times.    The 3 fled on foot North on Lincoln Avenue.  The student was not hurt.
