RENTAL INSPECTION ORDINANCE 01/12/11 0830 E.A.

A FEE SCHEDULE FOR A RENTAL INSPECTION ORDINANCE WAS APPROVED AT THE SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL MEETING YESTERDAY. THE ORDINANCE WILL REQUIRE PROPERTY OWNERS TO REGISTER RENTAL UNITYS WITH THE CITY AT AN ANNUAL COST OF 45 DOLLARS, WITH AN ADDITIONAL MINIMUM 20 DOLLAR FEE IF THE PROPERTY HAS TO BE INSPECTED. THE CITY COUNCIL ALSO APPROVED A DECISION TO USE REDEVELOPMENT FUNDS FOR THE ONGOING EMPLOYMENT OF FIRST ALARM SECURITY GUARDS IN DOWNTOWN SANTA CRUZ TO SUPPLEMENT LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS CURRENTLY PATROLLING THE AREA.

FORD ORD REDEVELOPMENT 01/12/11 0800 E.A.

A PANEL OF THE 6TH DISTRICT COURT OF APPEAL HAS DECIDED THAT A LOCAL DEVELOPER MUST PAY PREVAILING WAGES ON A FORD ORD REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT. CYPRESS MARINA HEIGHTS L.P., THE DEVELOPER OF THE 250-ACRE MARINA HEIGHTS HOUSING SUBDIVISION, HAD FILED AN APPEAL AFTER A 2006 RULING BY A MONTEREY COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT JUDGE THAT PREVAILING WAGES MUST BE PAID ON THE PROJECT. PREVAILING WAGES ARE SET ANNUALLY BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, AND OFTEN MIRROR UNION CONSTRUCTION WAGE SCALES.

S.C. BIKE PATH RELOCATION 01/12/11 0700 E.A.

A RESOLUTION TO RELOCATE THE SANTA CRUZ PORTION OF THE PACIFIC COAST BIKE ROUTE WAS APPROVED AT THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING YESTERDAY. THE PATH CURRENTLY RUNS ALONG MISSION STREET, WHERE 2 BICYCLISTS HAVE BEEN FATALLY STRUCK BY VEHICLES IN RECENT YEARS. THE RELOCATION PLAN INCLUDES MOVING THE BIKE PATH TO WEST CLIFF DRIVE, A ROUTE WITH CONSIDERABLY LESS VEHICLE TRAFFIC. A MOTION WAS APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS TO REQUEST THAT BICYCLE COMMITTEES AND THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION STUDY WAYS TO IMPROVE SAFETY ON WEST CLIFF DRIVE.

SAL. TEENS FACE ADDT’L CHARGES 1-12-11 08:30 a.v.

2 minors who were arrested after a car chase involving officers over the weekend, now face additional charges. 20-year old Ignacio Ramirez and 2 teens were arrested for weapon and gang charges following a stolen car chase in Salinas Sunday. A follow-up investigation found the 15 and 17 year old boys were involved in 2 different armed robberies that took place Friday in Salinas. Both minors remain in juvenile hall on additional robbery charges.

MISSING WVILLE WOMAN 1-12-11 07:40 a.v.

A 45-year old Watsonville woman has been reported missing. Marie “Yvonne” Schiro was last seen on December 27th and was reported missing on December 29th. The mother of 3 was last seen returning from her aunt’s home in Lompoc in a blue, 4-door 1998 Plymouth Neon. Schiro, who has a history of mental illness, is described as being about 5-feet-5-inches tall, weighing 140 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department asks anyone with information to call 9-1-1.
