Last night, the board of trustees for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District voted 4 – 3 to fire the district’s Superintendent. The decision was made in a closed session, and trustees Jennifer Holm, Maria Orozco and Kim De Serpa opposed that vote. No reason for the firing of Michelle Rodriguez was given, and the teachers union is now working to find that out.

20-25 homes were damaged by mudflows from the River Fire burn scar, including some where the mud went inside the homes. They are on the 800 to 13-hundred blocks of river road. After shifting south toward Big Sur and the Dolan Fire burn scar, yesterday morning, the atmospheric river moved back north toward the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas in the early afternoon. First responders patrolled the River Road area to check on residents who stayed behind, and assist those impacted by the mudflows. As of Wednesday afternoon, the S.P.C.A. of Monterey County was caring for 41 evacuated pets, including nine dogs, 14 cats, 17 horses and 1 donkey.
Another system is expected to move into the area Saturday but the forecast calls for most of the rain to fall north of the Monterey Bay.

The 44 miles of Highway 1 from just south of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn to Ragged Point will remain closed until at least tomorrow, because that’s when Cal-Trans plans to re-assess the coastal road. There are currently several areas of moderate damage, rockfall, and mudflows on Highway 1 in that 44-mile stretch.
