Central Coast health and government leaders have offered a mixed response to Blue Shield's COVID-19 vaccine allocation and distribution plan.
Blue Shield of California has signed a contract with the state to serve as a third-party administrator in an effort to accelerate the allocation and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to Californians.
Public Health Officer Dr. David Ghilarducci, who works with San Benito County and Santa Cruz County's health departments, is hopeful this move will help with the organization and management of an otherwise varied and confusing process.
On the other side, Monterey County Supervisor Wendy Root Askew has some concerns about how Blue Shield will ensure equity in their vaccine allocation program.

Religious groups and community organizations in the Central Valley are putting pressure on elected leaders to provide the COVID-19 vaccine to migrant workers sooner.
Rev. Nelson Rabell, an associate pastor with Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Lodi, and co-founder of A New Lodi, said “"Those who are allowing us to somehow keep moving in the middle of this pandemic because they do the essential work, they need to be vaccinated first.”
His efforts are one of many creating a united front to vaccinate field workers sooner and protect them from COVID-19.
Rabell is urging people to reach out to their local elected officials to encourage the federal government to speed up the process.
