The 13th annual Salinas Relay for Life fundraiser raised about 650-thousand yesterday. The cancer awareness effort is still accepting donations, through August 31st. The walk-a-thon began on Saturday at 10 a.m., and featured about 140-teams walking around the track at the Salinas sports complex. About 6-thousand people were estimated to have participated in this year’s event. The money raised will go to the American Cancer Society for education and care programs.

A San Jose-based company that manufactures electronics products has donated a semi-conductor machine to a ucsc researcher, who hopes to use it to aid in his studies of how to convert heat into electricity. The 4.5-million dollar machine is being given by the company Philips Lumileds, which makes light-emitting diodes, (which are known as L.E.D.s) and are alternatives to incandescent and florescent bulbs. The semi-conductor is expected to be installed in the Santa Cruz home of ucsc associate professor of engineering Nobuhiko Kobayashi.
The state assembly today unanimously passed a bill that would secure federal funding for establishing a health insurance-pool for high-risk patients. The bill is 1 of several that will revise California’s insurance laws to conform with the recent federal overhall. Once passed, the bills would secure 761-million dollars in federal funds, through 2014, to fund insurance coverage for about 30-thousand residents with pre-existing conditions. The bill passed 60-0, and now heads to the state senate for consideration.
Two suspected gang members have been taken into custody, in connection with the murder of a Watsonville man last fall. 21-year-old Richard Campos was the father of two children, before being gunned down in Septmeber, 2009, in what police believe was a gang-related attack. On Friday, police arrested 30-year-old Joel Sanchez, and 18-year-old Jose Meza. The 2-were booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on murder charges, with gang-enhancements.
3-separate grass fires broke out near Hollister this afternoon, at 2 p.m. The fires started off of Fairview and John Smith Roads. 1-outbuilding was destroyed (a hay barn), but no residences were damaged, and no injuries were reported. About 30-acres was scorched before Cal-Fire crews contained the flames, with the assistance of air support.
