S.C. ARSONIST SENTENCED 07-09-10 06:30 a.v.

A Santa Cruz man pleaded not guilty yesterday to setting fire to a Santa Cruz City attorney’s office last week.  52-year old Miguel William Balderos was charged with arson after he was arrested Saturday, a day after causing over $50,000 worth of damages to the Church Street law offices of Atchison, Barisone, Condotti and Kovacevich. The firm reportedly contracts with the city to provide legal assistance. Balderos, who has previously claimed affiliation as an anarchist and has arrests which date back to 2000, awaits sentencing for a preliminary hearing slated for July 19th.

WATSONVILLE MAN SENTENCED 07-09-10 06:00 a.v.

A Watsonville man, charged with beating his 3-year old nephew, was sentenced this week to spend 6 years in jail. 21-year old Jose Luis Ornelas Junior was sentenced Wednesday after he repeatedly punched his nephew in the face while the child was visiting relatives in Watsonville on March 18th. Prosecutors say the child suffered 2 black eyes and severe facial swelling. Ornelas was charged with felony child abuse after he was arrested. Meanwhile, the boy’s stepfather, 27-year old Armando Saldana, was also charged in the case, he pleaded no contest to one count of child endangerment on June 25th, and is awaiting sentencing later this month.

MONTEREY MUNICIPAL BEACH CLOSED 07-09-10 05:50 a.v.

A Monterey Beach was closed this week due to a sewage spill from a storm drain. Monterey County Health officials report the spill to be coming from a storm drain at Pacific Street draining into the bay at Monterey Municipal Beach. No sewage has yet been seen spilling into the water, however the beach was closed as of 3:45 p.m. Wednesday as a precaution. The spill is said to be caused by a blockage in a sewer main due to overgrown tree roots. The beach is expected to remain closed until the water is safe under state guidelines.

2ND PERSON DIES IN MONASTERY BEACH DROWNING 07-08-10 19:00 a.v.

A second person has died after a Carmel beach rescue occurred over the weekend. 31-year old Nalini Kommineni succumbed to her injuries during the accidental drowning at Monastery Beach. Kommineni, a cupertino resident, is one of 3 people pulled from the water saturday and transported to the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula. Kommineni is 1 of 2 victims who died from the accidental drowning, 48-year old William R. Walker of San Jose, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

BART SHOOTING OFFICER FOUND GUILTY 07-08-10 18:30 a.v.

After more than 6 hours over 2 days, jurors announced a guilty verdict was reached just after 2 p.m. this afternoon for the former San Francisco Bay Area Transit officer, Johannes Mehserle, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of 22-year old Oscar Grant on an Oakland BART Platform on New Years Day. Involuntary manslaughter carries a sentence of 2 to 4 years in jail. Mehserle is expected to be sentenced on August 6th.
