Salinas Arrest 7/11/10 TDH

Salinas police arrested a 27-year-old parolee yesterday(sun), who is accused of assaulting his spouse, and then fleeing from police officers.   Witnesses contacted authorities just before 3 p.m., after allegedly seeing Kenny Mendenall physically assaulting a female, in a car at the intersection of Laurel Drive and Main Street.   When officers tried to stop the car, police say Mendenall fled on foot.   He was eventually located in a garage on Santa Clara Street, and taken into custody.   Police say the victim’s injuries did not require her to be treated at a hospital.   Kenny Mendenall faces several charges, including resisting arrest, spousal abuse, and violating parole.

Choking victim saved 7/11/10 TDH

A Salinas police officer used the Heimlich-maneuver to help save a choking victim on Saturday.   The officer, Jeff Munoz, was patrolling the Kiddie-Capers parade, in Salinas, at 6:20 p.m., when he noticed the woman choking.   Munoz used the Heimlich, and the victim began breathing normally again.   She was later treated at the scene by medical personnel, and released.   Officer Munoz’s heroics were met with applause by the parade-watchers who witnessed the rescue.

Farmland preserved 7/11/10 TDH

On Saturday, a ceremony was held to mark the preservation of almost 1-thousand acres of agricultural land in the Pajaro Valley.    4-land owners entered easement agreements with the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, to set aside 14-properties east of Watonsville for permanent agricultural use.   The easements secure the development rights for the 987-acres, and were purchased with 4.5-million dollars of state and federal funds.

Santa Cruz's Sanctuary Exploration Center 7/11/10 TDH

A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled to be held this morning(mon) in Santa Cruz, to mark the beginning of construction of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center.   The Center will be located at 35 Pacific Avenue, near the Santa Cruz Municipal wharf.   The ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.   Once it is completed, the center is expected to house interactive exhibits, classrooms, and lab facilities.

Election(candidacy) deadline 7/11/10 TDH

Any resident who plans on running in November’s general election must start filing candidate papers today(mon).   Today is the deadline to begin the filing process, and papers must be completely filed by August 6th.   The date is August 11th if the incumbent does not file for re-election.  Several local seats will be on the ballot, including city council races, school boards, and other positions.  For more information, contact your county’s elections clerk.
