Due to the recent rainfall, and the cooler temperatures, Cal-Fire’s San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit has lifted the suspension of burning in the 2 counties. That means that people who wish to burn yard waste, or have campfires, can do so if they get the needed permits. More information can be found by calling the local fire station, or going on-line to either:

Although toned down a bit for 2020, Pacific Grove’s iconic Candy Cane Lane is still taking place this holiday season. Due to the pandemic, instead of walking along Morse Drive, it’s recommended that people drive down Candy Cane Lane. The tradition of decorating the whole neighborhood reportedly dates back about 60 years, and although Platt Park (in the middle of candy cane lane) is usually decorated too, this year it will be dark, so as to encourage people not to gather there the way they have in the past.

California’s oldest state park has received about half a million dollars toward the fire recovery effort there. That after more than 86-thousand acres burned in the CZU August Lightning Complex Fires, burning 97 percent of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, including the headquarters building and many other historic structures there. The campgrounds, park housing, and interpretive nature building were also seriously damaged. Although there are early signs of new growth, it remains to be seen how the forest will fair through the rainy season. Currently there is no set timeframe for Big Basin Redwoods State Park re-opening to the public.
