First Night Monterey Tonight 12-31-20 07:40 S.S.

Although  people  won’t  be  gathering outside  for  First  Night  Monterey  this  year,  there  will be  a  virtual  version.    In  fact,  it’s  a  virtual  version  done  in  collaboration  between  the Monterey  Jazz  Festival’s  Next  Generation  Jazz  Band....and  First  Night  celebrations  in  Saint  Petersburg  Florida  and  Springfield, Illinois.   Other First Night performances include the Yvette Gonzales-Nacer Trio performing an eclectic Latin mix; the Black Irish Band, which has played in past first night celebrations; Heartstrings, which bills itself as performing “punk-ish pop rock music that is written mostly about love;” and Mc Lars, Dirty Cello and East Of Eden with Kiki Wow in her final Monterey concert.

The Dec. 31 festivities run from 6 p.m. to midnight with kids’ night out activities beginning at 3 p.m. Featuring dance, art and storytelling. The celebration will be broadcast at youtube.com/firstnightmonterey.

There is no cost but the festival encourages contributions on its website: firstnightmonterey.org. First night’s office line is (831) 373-4778.

Fatal H-N-R Tues On 101 12-31-20 07:30 S.S.

The  C.H.P.  is  still  looking  for  the  person  who  drove  away  from  a  fatal  accident  Tuesday  night.  That  after  a  vehicle  struck  a  person  who  was  walking  on  southbound  Highway  101.   The  6:30  p.m.  accident  took  place  just  north  of  laurel  drive  in  the  Salinas  area.

Public’s Help Sought for Finding Missing Teen 12-30-20 23:54 DC

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is seeking public help to locate a missing teen.

16-year-old Jess Schroeder was last seen Sunday leaving his home in Aptos.

Schroeder was last seen wearing olive green pants, a grey windbreaker, and a red hat. Deputies said they believe he was headed to the Watsonville area and could still be there.

Anyone with information is asked to call police dispatch at 831-471-1121.

SC Ordered to Stop Clearing Homeless from San Lorenzo Park 12-30-20 23:25 DC

A San Francisco judge granted a temporary restraining order Wednesday that forced the city of Santa Cruz to stop clearing a homeless encampment at San Lorenzo Park.

Magistrate Judge Susan Van Keulen issued the ruling after a group of homeless residents filed a lawsuit in federal court Wednesday morning.

The restraining order, which lasts until Jan. 6, demands that the city halt the closure of San Lorenzo Park and the nearby Benchlands encampments. Van Keulen will later decide whether to continue the restraining order as the lawsuit proceeds.

Free SC Bus Rides Fri (Limited Sat) 12-30-20 23:05 DC

METRO -- The Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District -- has announced that its METRO bus service will be providing free local transit rides county-wide -- including the Hwy-17 Express -- all day today on New Year’s Eve (Today/Thursday) and free fare on the Hwy-17 Express on New Year’s Day (Friday/tomorrow).

METRO said it would like to express its gratitude to all essential workers who continue to assist our community in these difficult times and as a sign of their appreciation, the bus service is saying goodbye to 2020 and ringing in a brighter 2021 by providing free fares all day to its riders.
