COVID Deaths Increasing Locally 01-06-21 21:34 DC

Officials said Wednesday that more than 10% of all COVID-19 related deaths in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties have been reported since the start of the new year.

On Dec. 31, Monterey County had 193 reported deaths, Santa Cruz County had 83 and San Benito County had 29. Those numbers now stand at 216, 91, and 34. The 36 new cases out of the 341 total bring the percentage of deaths since Dec. 31 to about 10.5%.

Yesterday and Tuesday, Monterey County has reported 20 new deaths, Santa Cruz County has reported 8 and San Benito County reported 5. The total number of deaths in the past 36 hours tops 33, about 9.7% of all deaths reported on the Central Coast since the start of the pandemic.

Sac Trump Protest 01-06-21 17:24 DC

Some protesters were arrested during at the Capitol today as Sacramento police advised people to use alternate routes when traveling downtown.

The protests by supporters of President Trump against the results of the presidential election coincided with demonstrations elsewhere in the country, including in Washington D.C., where protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol.

In Sacramento, police said some people were arrested for carrying pepper spray. Police later said that "some physical altercations between two groups of demonstrators have been reported."

Jobless $$$ Went to Inmates 01-06-21 16:50 DC

More than $40 million intended to help people left jobless by California’s coronavirus pandemic probably went to inmates in out-of-state jails and prisons.

The state has acknowledged that its Employment Development Department was bilked out of hundreds of millions of dollars in COVID-19 unemployment funds that went to fraudsters, including some in the name of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

Monterey and San Benito Chop Shops Closed 01-06-21 16:25 DC

The Multi-Agency Detail Combating Auto Theft has made dozens of arrests and has found more than 100 stolen vehicles over the past two months in Monterey and San Benito Counties.

The task force identified and shut down two chop shops. According to the Sheriff's Office, 24 people were arrested on auto theft, weapons and drug-related charges. The more than 100 stolen vehicles found had a total estimated value of more than $700,000.

Some CA Unemployment Checks Stopped 01-06-21 15:46 DC

Many California residents received a notice on Dec. 31 from the state’s agency in charge of unemployment benefits informing them that their payments had been frozen.

“You have been receiving unemployment benefits, but we have temporarily suspended your claim because it may be tied to fraudulent activity,” the notices read.

California’s Employment Development Department said they have strengthened their fraud detection methods. For accounts deemed to be “higher risk,” the EDD is asking people to provide documentation to re-verify their identity before issuing payments resume.
