Wville 4-Story Approved 01-13-21 11:06 S.S.

A  4-story,  50-unit  apartment  building  is  one  step  closer  to  becoming  a  reality  in  Watsonville.    That  after  Watsonville  Planning  Commissioners  recommended  that  the  city  council  move  forward  with  the  mixed-use  apartment  complex.     If  approved,  it  will  be  built  near  the  corner  of  East  5th  and  Main  Streets,  with  retail  space  at  ground  level,  and  the  housing  units  above.    

The  proposed  location  has  been  surrounded  by  a  cyclone  fence  ever  since  the  previous  structure  was torn  down  in  2019.

Sal Commercial Bldg – Fire 01-13-21 10:56 S.S.

The  Ford  Commercial  Vehicle  Center  in  Salinas  suffered  serious  fire  damage  this  morning.   The  blaze  was  called  in  around  6  a.m.  in  the  warehouse  section  of  the  building  on  the  700  block  of  Elvee  Drive.    Neither  the  cause,  nor  the  origin  of  the  fire,  have  been  determined  yet,  however,  no  one  is  believed  to  have  been  injured  in  the  structure  fire.

SC Riverfront Mixed-Use 01-13-21 09:31 S.S.

A  large  mixed-use  project  has  been  approved  5-2  by  the  Santa  Cruz  City  Council.    The  front  street  project  has  been  5  years  in  the  making,   and  will  include  retail  space  below,  with  175  condominiums  above  that....along  with  a  basement  and  ground-level  parking  garage,  and  public  plazas.  To  do  that,  3  existing  buildings  (including  2  historic  ones)  will  need  to  be  demolished  so  that  three  7-story  structures  can  be  constructed  on  the  east  side  of  front  street  (near  the  San  Lorenzo  River  Levee).   Although  the  city  requires  that  15  percent  of  any  housing constructed  be  for  low,  or  very  low,  income people.....this  project  only  provides  11  percent.  The  monthly  rent  for  a  very-low-income  studio  apartment  in  the  new  buildings  is  slated  to  be  $963.

New Flights Coming Soon 01-13-21 08:47 S.S.

Non-stop  flights  from  the  Monterey  Regional  Airport  to  Portland  Oregon  are  expected  to  begin  in  late  May.     The  carrier  is  Allegiant,  and  the  non-stop  flight  will  take  place  twice  a  week.

Auto Break-Ins – Arrests 01-13-21 07:58 S.S.

A couple   has  been  arrested  in  connection  with  break-ins  of  vehicles  at  Sanborn  County  Park  in  the  Santa  Cruz  Mountains.     Reportedly  one  of  the  victims  saw  some  of  her  items  for  sale  on  the  website  OfferUp.    36  year-old   Christine  Farantino,  and  her  31  year-old  boyfriend  Joseph  Mantione,  who  was  on  probation  for  the  possession  of  stolen  property  in  Merced  county  at  the  time,  were  both  taken  into custody.
