A settlement was reached this week against a Salinas paperboard packaging manufacturer. The company, Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. has been accused of committing unlawful business practices by concealing work-related injuries and trying to prevent employees from filing worker’s injury compensation claims. The company has agreed to pay $100,000 in civil penalties, and another $4,200 in victim restitution after 2 former Smurfit-Stone managers, who were accused of violating worker’s injury compensation rights, pleaded no contest in March to misdemeanor charges of concealing events related to on-the-job injuries and conspiring to deny injured workers their benefits.
