2 City employees were honored during the Santa Cruz City council meeting today. Director of the Parks and Recreation division, Dannettee Shoemaker and solid waste worker in the Public Works Department, John Lippi, were both acknowledged by council members during today’s 3 p.m. meeting. Also during today’s meeting, Mayor Mike Rotkin issued a proclamation recognizing July as Parks and Recreation month.

An off-duty nurse came to the rescue of a 2-year old boy who was choking Saturday at the Northridge Mall movie theatre in Salinas. 38-year old Jesse Magallon happened to be in the lobby of the Century 14 movie theatre when the boy, Gabriel Rico started choking on a coin. Magallon performed the Heimlich Maneuver, along with other techniques, to help dislodge the coin. Both the boy’s mother and Magallon had bought tickets to see same movie, when the incident took place in the theater's lobby.

In a 2009 crop report released today, the Monterey County Ag Industry reached the 4-billion dollar mark, while strawberries came in number 1 in the county, for the first time, passing leaf lettuce as the top producing commodity in the Salinas Valley. According to Ag officials, last year’s strawberry crop was worth over 750-million dollars, and in the last 20 years, the number of acres planted for strawberries has doubled from 5,000 acres to over 11,000. 88% of the nation’s strawberry crop is grown in California.

THE FAMOUS “PAINTER OF LIGHT”, THOMAS KINKADE, PLEADED NOT GUILTY THIS MORNING, TO CHARGES HE DROVE DRUNK IN CARMEL JUNE 11TH. THE 52 YEAR-OLD WAS ARRAIGNED IN A MONTEREY COUNTY COURT ROOM. KINKADE’S ATTORNEY HAS ASKED FOR ADDITIONAL TIME TO ALLOW HIM TO GET A SAMPLE OF BLOOD FROM THAT NIGHT RE-TESTED. A PRE-TRIAL FOR KINKADE HAS BEEN SET FOR JULY 29TH.
