A 2-week narcotics sweep in Sonoma County has culminated in the seizure of about 150-thousand marijuana plants, that have an estimated value of roughly 300-million dollars. The pot was being grown on private and public lands, in rugged terrain near Lake Sonoma. The seizure comes as law enforcement officials confiscated 16-thousand marijuana plants in San Benito County yesterday(thurs).

Two of the three men accused of gunning down a Watsonville man last fall pleaded not guilty today(fri), to murder charges with gang enhancements. The 3rd suspect, 23-year-old Angel Moreno Torres is currently in State Prison, and will face the charges at a later date. Today, 18-year-old Jose Meza and 30-year-old Joel Sanchez appeared in Santa Cruz County court to enter the not guilty pleas, regarding the murder of 20-year-old Richard Campos. Campos was sitting in his car on Roache Road and Carey Avenue in Watsonville, on September 15th, when he was shot to death. Meza and Sanchez are set to be back in court to schedule a preliminary hearing on Augut 12th.

State transportation officials have agreed to provide the necessary funding to acquire a branch rail line in Santa Cruz County. 10.2 million dollars is expected to come from state coffers to build the project along 32-miles of scenic land between Watsonville to Davenport. The proposed plan is to turn the Union Pacific Rail, along the coast, into an eventual passenger and recreational service line. The project is expected to cost roughly 23.5 million dollars, which includes the 14.2 million rail line purchase and improvement costs.

Starting tomorrow, July 3rd, shuttle service will be provided at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in an effort to reduce congestion near the beach. The free shuttle will run every 30 minutes, beginning at 1 p.m. ending at 11 p.m., on weekends only, both Saturday and Sundays now through the Labor Day weekend. The shuttle will pick passengers up by the stairs in front of the courthouse and drop off at the intersection of Cliff and 1st Streets, next to the Boardwalk Bowl.
